Last year, Super 7 surprised a lot of people by offering numerous Masters of the Universe figures and collectibles at San Diego Com-Con 2015. These included faux prototypes of the Mattel Jumbo MOTU Figures and faux prototype retro Kenner style action figures. They followed that up with grayscale versions for New York Comic-Con. Eventually the revealed full color versions, and those versions are now available.
These retro style Masters of the Universe 3.75″ Scale Action Figures come packaged on classic style cardbacks. The cards feature artwork from Jason Edmiston. Overall
These definitely aren’t for every MOTU fan, but I was surprised by how much I liked these. I’ve had a love/hate relationship with the ReAction line. At times, I’ve really enjoyed what we’ve gotten, and at other times, I’ve been perplexed by some releases. When it became clear that these were goign to start being as prevalent as Pop Vinyls, I realized I was mostly done. However, certain releases in that style have held my interest. When these MOTU figures were announced, I was pretty pleased with their look.
The first thing that you’ll notice with these is the packaging. The overall presentation is fantastic and is eye catching from far away or up close. It’s has a nice modern-retro vibe, with impressive character artwork for each figure. I can see a lot of fans grabbing these and just keeping them sealed as they can definitely function as mini-art pieces.
The figures themselves are exactly what you’d expect. they stand at 3.75″ tall and each have five points of articulation. The sculpting is definitely modeled after the early Kenner style, with very soft detailing. At times, the details are a little too soft, such as with He-Man’s head sculpt. A little more definition there would have gone a long way. The paint work is decent enough, but the style doesn’t call for heavy paint application. Each figure includes a weapon that fits easily in their hands. The swords for He-Man and Mer Man are oversized.
Whether or not you enjoys these will depend on how much you’ve liked these retro style figures. There are more MOTU 3.75″ figures coming, so there is definitely an audience for these. The 80’s designs combined with great packaging makes these worthwhile pick ups for fans of the style.
