Late last year, NECA released a great looking foam replica of the Alien Egg and Facegugger. The life size foam replica set cost almost $450. With the price being what it was, it meant many of NECA’s Aliens fans could only admire it from afar. Thankfully, NECA offered a compromise and a few months ago announced that the Facehugger replica would see a standalone release. Not only that, but the price would be less than $60! Overall
The Facehugger came packaged in a cardboard box with the Alien logo and a little Facehugger art on it. It was a bit too large for my photography display, and is mainly just a mailer. The Facehugger has a small tag with a barcode on it for retail stores. It’s easily clipped off. When the Egg and Facehugger set were originally announced, I had planned on getting that eventually. Even at $450, it was a steal for such a massive collectible and display piece. The big problem, for me, was the Egg. I simply had nowhere to easily display it. With the standalone Facehugger, the space issue became much less of a problem. I’d still like to get the egg at some point, but this is a fun way to hold me over.
The sculpt on the Facehugger is outstanding front to back. The intricate details, such as the fingernails and gruesome underbelly look very authentic. The paintwork here is simple, but effective. The Facehugger is mainly a yellow-ish tan, with washes of darker browns throughout. The underside uses much more reds and dark browns. There’s a clear coat over the whole piece, giving it a wet and slimy appearance. It measures at 3.5 feet long and is just about 2 foot wide from the two longest appendages. Being cast in foam, the Facehugger is extremely light weight. The tail features a metal wire running through it, allowing it to be bent and posed in a few different way. The assorted fingers, however, cannot be bent and are solid foam.
If you have the room, this is extremely easy to recommend. The price is just right and the Facehugger looks fantastic in hand (or on your face). Check out a few select photos below and a full gallery after that.
