Overall
Since this assortment was announced, the Kenenr style Aliens have become NECA’s most anticipated Aliens releases. The new figures offer fans wildly different takes on the Xenomorph designs, bringing some great variety to our collections. The figures come packaged in blister card backs styled after the classic Kenner packaging, including new character art. The packages also include reprints of the mini-comics that were included with the Kenner originals. These comics come in place of individual character bios.
Gorilla Alien
The primate Xenomorph stands over 8″ tall and has over 25 points of articulation. Fans will be happy to know that double jointed knees and elbows are included, as well as a bendable tail. The Gorilla Alien includes three head sculpt display options. You can display him using either the transparent dome, the black dome or no dome at all. A blue and black Facehugger is included with the Gorilla Alien.
Of the three figures in this wave, the Gorilla Alien is the closest to the closest to a classic Xenomorph design. The more gorilla-like aspects show through in the head, forearm and hand designs. The underlying skull design really sells it, with a very different sculpt compared to more classic Aliens. There are some really creepy and cool aspects, such as the wires that penetrate the eye sockets. The figure has a wonderful dark blue paint deco with a heavy black wash over it. The deco is another aspect that helps the gorilla Alien blend into the classic Alien designs a bit more. Articulation is excellent here, and each of the joints has a nice, wide range of movement. It’s very easy to get the figure into gorilla poses, with the knuckles dragging on the ground. It makes for a fun figure to pose.
Mantis Alien
The Mantis Alien is a huge and beautifully designed figure. The figure has at least 30 points of articulation and stands taller than the Gorilla when his legs are fully extended. The Mantis also includes a small Alien creature that Aliens fans should be happy to see. The Mantis includes a green and black version of the Chestburster that came with the Aliens Creature Pack.
Hands down, the Mantis Alien is the highlight of a very good wave. The design and sculpt really embrace the Mantis aspect, giving this figure a very different look among NECA’s Aliens figures. It’s unmistakably and Alien Xenomorph, but the reverse joint leg designs, the Mantis abdomen, the head sculpt and the elongated claw arms give this figure a look that is quite unique. The Mantis Alien is made of slightly transparent green plastic, with heavy use of silver-ish paint throughout. The large amount of articulation offers some really enjoyable posing options, as you can use the claws to balance the figure or stand him on just the legs. Everything about this figure came together perfectly, and I think it’s now my favorite Alien figure yet. It’s going to be hard for NECA to top this design and execution in the future.
Queen Facehugger
This figure is a release that offers fans another uncommon figure design for their collection. The Queen Facehugger is a massive variation of the Facehuger species. The figure has a bendable tail and a bit of rotation and movement in the legs. There is a smaller Queen Facehugger included with this release, though it’s still a bit larger than a normal Facehugger figure.
The Queen Facehugger, much like the Kenenr original, is a much larger version of the Facehugger. It has a red and black color scheme and featured webbing between the legs. Fans of Alien 3 will no doubt recognize that his figure has a lot in common with the Queen, Royal or Super Facehugger seen in a deleted scene from the film. The scene was also added back in with the Assembly Cut of the movie. The figure looks to take more design cues from the film version than the Kenner version, which hopefully leads to a proper Alien 3 version of the figure, perhaps with the alien 3 Creature Pack. The sculpting on both of these figures is excellent, with great attention to detail on the webbing, tails and undersides of the Queen Facehuggers.
There is a lot to love about NECA’s Kenner inspired Aliens figures. The wave offers outstanding sculpts, impressive paint apps and unique designs for all three figures. There were no quality issues on any of the figures, with strong joints, no paint locking and no breakages. You can’t ask for much more than that. Check out some select highlight photos below with over 115 photos after that.
