The A Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge – 1/4 Scale Freddy Krueger by NECA is now available in stores and online. The 18″ tall figure is based on the second film in the A Nightmare On Elm Street Series, and was the film that helped to craft the more iconic look for Freddy. In the second film, the makeup department made numerous tweaks to the character, such as adding striped to his sleeves, and refining the burnt make up to look less like fresh burns. The makeup would be updated again for Dream Warriors, which became the default look for Freddy in the subsequent films. For the figure, NECA included everything you would need for a film accurate Freddy’s Revenge figure. The 1/4 scale release includes two interchangeable heads, interchangeable claw hands and a removable hat. Toyark sponsor Dorkside Toys sent along the figure for us to check out. Overall
The first thing you’ll notice about this 1/4 scale Freddy Krueger is the stellar packaging design. The box is designed to look like the entrance to the Elm Street house, with Freddy peering through the window on the front door. The sides look like the windows on each side of the door, with a photo of the Freddy figure lurking inside the house. Even better? The front door on the box is a flap, which opens up to reveal the figure inside. Velcro holds the door closed, so you don’t have to worry about it ripping off or hanging open. The back is a shout out to the “radical” designs of the 80’s, with neon poster designs and more. Inside, the Freddy figure is held in by a ton of twist ties (get some nail clippers to speed up removal). The figure includes a snarling head sculpt, a screaming head sculpt, a vinyl hat, and an extra claw hand from the end of the film. Figure packaging, at times, can feel like an afterthought, especially for such a large figure. But this added touch, with a few great call backs to the film franchise, really adds to the overall appeal of this figure.
Freddy stands about 18″ tall without the hat on, and has around 25 points of articulation. Knees and elbows are both single jointed. It doesn’t hurt the range of leg motion much, but the arms could have used some added articulation for better dynamic posing on a large figure. The sculpt, from top to bottom is excellent. The head sculpts are both handled with great attention to details. The scarring is thick and with sharp lines around the eyes and mouth, giving the figure some nice realism. Little details like the exposed brain on the screaming head sculpt, the added texture to the tongue really shine here. The strong sculpting continues throughout the figure, with a nice textured sweater and gritting looking hands. The gloved claw hand turned out quite well, with the fingers looking as if they could be individually articulated, though they are not. It’s no surprise that NECA has covered this figure in paint. The head sculpts alone have at least four layers of detailing and paint washes, with the highlight dots to the eyes being a great touch. The yellowed teeth, blackened gums, and subtle use of clear coat add that extra bit the figure needs to look even more menacing. The only real issue I ran into was with the gloved hand. The blades were all bent and twisted around each other. It took lots of heating, flattening and waiting for them to cool to get them how they are seen in the photos. They’ve started to curl back up and will require additional attention to straighten out. But the material is soft enough that it will eventually stay straight with some care.
On the whole, though, this is a very enjoyable figure. The great sculpting and paint work far outweighed any quibbles. Space may be an issue for some, but if you have the room, and love Freddy, then this is worth a pick up. The packaging alone is worth it, as it acts as its own display piece.
