Well, you can’t have Armored Batman without Superman, right? Our gallery today takes a look at the second DC Films figure – Superman from Dawn of Justice. Like Armored Batman, Superman stands in the 7 inch scale and features all the key points. Great sculpt, above average articulation at all the right points, solid paint, multiple heads and hands, accessories. On paper, it’s a perfect figure. Overall Thoughts
Another winner. I never jumped into the Mattel figs for Man of Steel or BVS, and the recent Mafex Supes looks good in pics, but isn’t great in-hand. Lots of floppy joints, a weird cape, and dark skin tone. Mezco’s One:12 looks boss, but hasn’t released yet and will be different since it’s fabric based for the suit. Good, but not a standard action figure as we’re used to today. This DC Collectibles DC Films offering is almost perfect. Sculpt is on point. Articulation there. Suit colors are perfect. Cape is the best I’ve handled, thinner material with a wire on the sides. Easiest to maneuver around and get it how you want. Not 100% perfect, it’s a little fussy, but best I’ve handled yet for Supes or Bats. The head sculpt is great, all the molding is there, but the paint on it is weak. Lots of bare plastic with eyes, hair, lips painted on. Looks like a doll. At this level, skin tones deserve at least a wash, something matte to de-plasticize it.
The other gripe – the top of the legs at the hips. They’ve gone with a recessed cut in order to add some articulation range, but it looks ridiculous. It’s functional, yes, but if he’s in any standard pose, it looks like he’s wearing armor on his thighs underneath his skin tight suit. That cut style works for Armored Batman and layered gear folks, but not for the spandex crew. I’m all for functionality, so I would have gone with a flap in the crotch like Transformers have, or maybe something like the new SH Figuarts DBZ offerings. I don’t know why, that leg cut just bothers me, and I’m a laid back kinda guy with all that stuff.
In all though, this is the best DCEU Superman to be released so far aside from the 1/6th offerings. Its a big solid figure with all the right points, and works with Bats perfectly. If they keep up this sub-line, it has the potential to be great. Mixing in classic movie versions like Keaton Bats, Ledger Joker, Reeves Supes, and even some of the TV stuff once this current round in the other scale is done. This is the style, scale I want. They’re a little more expensive, so let’s see if everyone else is on board. Hopefully we’ll find out what’s going on in February at Toy Fair 2017!
