In the latest season of The Walking Dead TV Series, fans were introduced to the foul-mouthed leader of The Saviors; Negan. Carrying a barbed wire covered Baseball Bat he calls Lucille, Negan demands nothing short of total obedience from those that serve him. Follow his rules, supply his group with supplies or face a bloody death at his hands. Rick’s group learned that tragic lesson as both Glenn and Abraham met their fates when Negan introduced them to Lucille.
McFarlane Toys will be releasing two 7″ scale version of Negan in their Color Tops line. There will be a standard release Negan Figure and a Walmart Exclusive Blood Splattered Negan Figure. Overall
Negan is probably the most highly anticipated release in The Walking Dead line in some time. Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s charismatic portrayal of Negan has kept fans coming back, even if the current story hasn’t struck a chord with all the fans. Another reason I believe the figure is so anticipated is that Negan is one of the few characters (along with others like Daryl, Michonne and Ezekial) from the show that has a distinctive and eye-catching look. Always sporting his leather jacket and carrying Lucille, Negan’s look in the show is consistent and menacing. The figure captures that look perfectly, and even throws in a removable red scarf. Negan also includes a stand and an interchangeable right hand. The only difference between the two version is simply the blood splatter on the Walmart Exclusives. Other paint apps and the accessories are all the same.
This release sees McFarlane’s first attempt at the fully upgraded articulation that was announced back at Toy Fair. Compared to a figures such as Rich or Michonne, the Negan figure looks to be from an almost completely different line. Since the Color Tops started, McFarlane has sprinkled in a bit of additional articulation here and there. In many of those cases, the figure was still sculpted and intended for display in a very specific pose. Negan’s sculpt is more in line with a standard action figure, with no set pose in mind and the figure is all the better for it. The shoulders are ball jointed for a very good range of motion. The elbows have single joints, with ball joints on the wrists. There is a torso swivel, single joint articulated knees and swivel joints in the calf. The biggest change is in the hips. There, McFarlane added a double ended ball joint that, technically, should offer a very good, and dynamic, range of motion. The hips are cast in an extremely hard plastic, with no give to it, and with pieces hanging down (to blend into the legs), it hinders much of the movement that would otherwise be available. You can still get some forward and back movement, and the hips can swing out a bit. It’s a huge step in the right direction for McFarlane, and with just a few small changes would be nearly perfect.
The Negan figure is a huge step up for the Color Tops line. It feels much more in line with the 5″ line. It has a really well done sculpt, good paint apps, and the best articulation found in McFarlanes’s 7″ line.
