Last year, NECA brought fans three great Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles box sets as convention exclusives. The first two sets were based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arcade Game. Their third set was a Shredder and Foot Clan Set based on the classic Mirage comic series. For San Diego Comic-Con 2017, NECA released a new set, this time bringing together the Turtles and their enemies in one massive box set. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Collector’s Case features Donatello, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, as well as the villainous Shredder, Krang with Bubble Walker, and two Foot Soldiers. This set is based on the original cartoon, while many vintage style figures are based on the marketing materials. The figures are packed in a vintage style collectors case with artwork by Archie Comics artist Ken Mitchroney. Each figure includes interchangeable hands and character specific accessories.

Overall
The TMNT Box Set was immediately a hit with fans of the brand, as they perfectly captured the look of the original toon. Getting eight figures into one set essentially gives fans an instant classic figure collection. Each of the figures includes extra hands that can be shared among figures of the same mold. So, for the Turtles, you have a near limitless array of display options for each figure. The set also includes some outstanding accessories for each character. From pizza, to Turtle Comms, to an ooze canister, there’s a lot to take in once you open the set up. At $200, this is a set that has a lot of value for the seemingly high dollar amount. However, that comes out to only $25 per figure, so this wound up being a great overall deal for fans who were able to obtain the set. Acquiring the set, for those not attending the show, proved no easy task for fans. When it was placed for sale online, the set would sell out, in some cases, in less than 3 minutes.
The figures themselves are quite excellent looking in hand. The Turtles use the same sculpts that debuted in the TMNT Arcade Set last year. Each Turtle includes their specific weapons, along with some fun additions. Both opened and closed Turtle Comms are included, as is a pizza box, a pizza slice and a grappling hook. With cartoon accurate paint jobs, these molds really shine. The darker greens and more natural looking gradations in the color work well. The colorful aspects on the turtles, such as the orange carapce and the individually colored bandanas really pop against the more muted green. My set, thankfully, had mostly fine paint apps on the eyes. Unfortunately, I’ve seen a number of buyers get less than ideal application on their sets.
The real highlight of the set, for me, was the inclusion of cartoon accurate villains. Shredder and both Foot Soldiers look to share some parts with the Mirage based figures. However, there is heavy re-tooling involved. With new head sculpts all around, and assorted costume pieces swapped out for cartoon accurate sculpts. Krang is a wholly new sculpt, as is his Bubble Walker. Articulation junkies will find a lot to love here. The Shredder and Foot all featured double jointed knees and elbows, and ever have articulated toes. Like the Turtles, these figures include an assortment of interchangeable hands and some great accessories. A Comm for shredder features artwork of Krang, while other items include guns for the Foot, a sword for shredder, a pistol that can be used by Krang or shredder and a mutagen canister are all included here. Again, the paint job here looks great on these figures. I noticed no glaring errors or misaligned apps on these guys.
I am really pleased with this set. The presentation, from the functional packaging, to the trays are great. The figures all look stunning in hand and they’re fun to pose and set up battle scene displays. There’s a lot to enjoy here and it’s well worth tracking the set down, as long as you don’t have to pay too much for it. With more Turtles on the way, this set is a great starting point and a must own for fans of the original cartoon. Check out some highlight photos below and see the full gallery after that.
