S.H. Figuarts Dragonball Z Super Saiyan 3 Goku (2017)
Overall Thoughts
Super Saiyan 3. Have to do it, it was a key part of the show, but not my favorite. This version is definitely better than the first. That was one of the worst SHF DBZ figures to date. Ugly colors, washing was awful, couldn’t stand easily, hard shiny plastic. However, that doesn’t mean this guy is perfect either.
First some good points – he does stand better, without a stand in most cases. Still hard due to the back heavy hair, but it can be done. The range of motion is good with the modern body style. The baggy paints and double jointed knee work way better than the prior fold over method. Get used to it, this is the new Goku body so we’ll probably be seeing a lot of it. The sheen on the hair is nice. No dual tone weathering, but what is there is a step up from just yellow paint. Overall it’s a solid, base level figure. But..
Colors – No detailing or weathering anywhere. It’s just bright, primary colors. I don’t need it to be how early Vegeta and SS3 Goku were, but a little spice would help out, especially on the skin. He’s neon white under lights. Matte Finish – Not present. Most of the recent releases for DBZ, when going to the simpler color schemes had a matte finish. Someone in the industry told me it’s a method they apply to the mold itself, where they sand blast it to add texture. This gives the resulting figure that feel that was so good, and takes some of the shine off the plastic. That was a positive IMO, but was omitted here. The result is a shiny bright plastic that from a distance looks like a kids toy that could be in Wal-Mart. Going forward, Tamashii Nations really needs to figure out a way to refine these figures with a bright skin and big blocks of color without going full airbrush style again.
So, bottom line, better than the first, but overall a basic run of a figure. Completionists and those that missed the original should pick him up.
