In the Fall of 1987, Star Trek fans were introduced to a completely new take on Star Trek. Set nearly 80 years after the original series, Star Trek: The Next Generation followed a new crew that manned the latest take on the U.S.S. Enterprise, the NCC-1701-D. The cast was diverse and interesting, featuring surprise members, such as a Klingon, an android and even a blind conn officer. The crew was led by the charismatic Captain Jean-Luc Picard, played by the excellent Patrick Stewart. The show ran for seven seasons and the cast took part in four Star Trek films. A number of 1/6 scale action figures based on the series will be produced by Quantum Mechanix, and their line up kicks off with Captain Picard.

Overall
The Captain Picard figure comes packaged in a nice window box. The box includes a protective slip cover featuring a nice design and a few images of Picard. The figure and accessories sit in a plastic tray with a protective cover over it. The figure includes multiple interchangeable hands, a stylized figure stand, a Type II “Cobra-Head” Hand Phaser, a Phaser Rifle, a Tricorder, a Personal Access Display Device and an Earl Grey teacup. Like most 1/6 scale figures, Captain Picard stands just about 12″ tall, features around 30 points of articulation and has a fabric outfit. The parts and figure both fit easily back into the package for storage.
The first thing I noticed when first opening the figure is how well crafted the head sculpt was. The figure is instantly recognizable as Captain Picard, with a realistic likeness, and excellent paint work. The sculpt has a wonderful skin texture to it, with visible pores and even very minor stubble that’s only visible upon close inspection. The sculpted hair is nicely done, with a natural texture to it and the paint work carefully separates it from the main sculpt. They eyes are eerily realistic, with clean lines and a nice reflective gloss. The assorted hands are done equally as well, and the skin tones match up nicely. While some of the hands seem similar to each other, they are each designed with a specific scene or accessory in mind. The hands connect to the arms using a double jointed, articulated wrist joint. You can pop the hand off easily, or even remove the entire joint from the arm to more easily swap out hands. You may want to keep a hair dryer handy, as the peg connecting the wrist to the hand is small and the fit is nice and snug.
The fabric outfit looks great on the figure. The shirt seems to use a slightly thicker thread, giving Picard a slightly bulkier look. It’s not glaring, but is noticeable. The uniform itself appears perfectly screen accurate, with a permanently affixed communicator badge and a rank insignia on his collar. Picard includes holsters for both the Tricorder and his Phaser, which use magnets to attach to the hips. The magnets are strong and hold the accessories in place, even when handling the figure and posing. The outfit doesn’t hinder any range of motion and feels very lightweight. this is important as it allows the figure to stand in more dynamic poses without falling over. The ankles are nice and strong and I didn’t run into any issues with the figure tipping over. The assorted accessories includes all work nicely with the figure and look about as accurate as can be at the size. The Phaser and Phaser Rifle can both be held properly by the included hands. The Tricorder, like the holsters, feature small magnets. Instead of flipping open, you simply detach the bottom and reconnect to have it displayed open.
QMX did a great job with their Picard figure and it’s one worth purchasing for Star Trek fans. With multiple additional crew members like Worf, LaForge, Riker and Data all on the way, they show no signs of slowing down. Check out some highlight photos below and the full gallery after that.
