S.H. Figuarts Dragonball Super SSG Goku Photo Review

Goku goes to the next level as a Super Saiyan god! Sporting red hair at a level beyond Super Saiyan, he’s ready to battle Lord Beerus and test his might. S.H. Figuarts now has this version of the hero, joining the other core modern era DBZ representations (Beerus, Whis, SS Blue Goku, SS Blue Vegeta, Golden Frieza). Overall Thoughts:

A solid release, needed to complete the different looks of Goku line up. I do however have some issues. The figure is a tad too big, his look in the anime had him going skinny during this power up. The original prototype had this look down (see here), but when they switched to the new more articulated body style, he beefed up. I would have preferred they stick with the original style in the new body type. Second issue – the crotchal area. It has rotating flaps that allow for extra posing. Those, and the legs, have a paint wash on them. The under legs do not, and therefore stand out in resting poses. On top of that, it’s very difficult to fully close the gap between the flaps and the legs in those resting poses, so the under-leg is always visible. Other tri-cut crotches have worked on SHF DBZ, this one is a bit off. Last is the shoulders. It adds a front-flex rotation, which is good, but the sleeves of the shirt don’t completely fill the sculpted area of the shirt they slide into when in resting stance. It almost always looks mis-configured. The previous Goku upper arms were finicky, but you could get them lined up right with some effort. Much more difficult or impossible here.

So while there are some structural issues, overall It’s a solid Goku figure. I’m glad to have another modern era representation. For most fans, getting him in a fighting pose and popping him in the line up won’t be a problem.
