Available now from Quantum Mechanix is the Star Trek: The Original Series 1/6 Scale Captain’s Chair. This release is a scaled down replica of Captain Kirk’s chair from the U.S.S. Enterprise, complete with swivel base, light up panels and authentic sound effects. There are multiple sound and light settings that are available, using three AA Batteries or a mini USB cord to power the chair. It’s cast in an assortment of plastics, as well as a faux leather finish for the seat itself. It’s scaled perfectly to work with the previously released Captain Kirk 1/6 Scale figure.

Overall
The Captain’s Chair is packaged in a large windowless box. The packaging features photos of the chair itself, as well as details on the features of the chair. Inside the box, the chair is placed inside a plastic clamshell tray. No assembly is required, and the chair is ready for display as soon as it’s opened. If you would like to use the sound and light effects, you will need either three AA batteries or a mini-USB cable, neither of which is included. Sound effects include Standard Bridge Operations, Ship Wide Announcement, View Screen Scanning and a Red Alert.
The chair itself looks great. The design looks like it stepped right off the set. It has a mix of plastics for the main body. The chair itself is upholstered in a nice, realistic looking faux leather. The armrests have a very 60’s and 70’s looking wood grain finish to them. On the arm panels you have assorted switches and panels that light up. You can cycle through the different effects by pressing the disc drive. Sound effects are nice and crisp, and the volume can be adjusted via a knob on the back of the chair’s base, next to the USB power outlet. The lights on the right panel are fairly bright. The left hand panel, which features static light effects (no blinking) are a bit dimmer and don’t pop quite as much. QMX has a nice video demonstration that can be seen here. The chair has a solid feeling base, and a nice overall weight to it, which helps when seating Kirk in the chair. The faux leather has a nice grip to it, so Kirk never feels like he will slide off of the chair. The swivel rotates easily, but doesn’t feel loose at all.
There is a lot to like about the Captain’s Chair, especially if you’ve already invested in figures like Kirk, Spock and McCoy. It looks pretty much spot on to the show and looks perfect with Kirk at the helm. The included light and sound feature does help to soften the $130 price tag a bit.
