Today we are running a bit of catch up with a late run Star Wars The Last Jedi figure – Island Journey Rey. Rey is part of Wave 15, though everyone is using different terminology for that these days. Her wave mates were Lando, Royal Guard, Captain Phasma, First Order Stormtrooper, Poe Dameron, Captain Rex and DJ from TLJ. All of those we’ve looked at already except DJ. Rey’s look is from the end of The Force Awakens, and the start of The Last Jedi, where she travels to the island to meet Luke. She comes with a poncho, her staff, Han’s blaster, and Luke’s long lost saber. This version uses Hasbro’s new tech with the digital paint on the face. It’s a big come up from the original Rey which looked like a cheap bootleg in comparison. Overall it’s one of, if not the best, version of Rey that’s come out for Black Series so far and a sharp figure head to toe. Let’s take a closer look after the break courtesy of Dorkside Toys!

Overall Thoughts:
Sharp! I’ve dialed back my Black Series pick ups lately, only focusing on figs I really want as opposed to “Gotta Catch Em All’. This Rey actually shines a bit after several duds. The one that came with the Speeder is also great, but most of her face is hidden with the mask. Here, we get a great face sculpt, mixed with the new digital printing for the face. When zoomed in 100%, it can be a bit soft, off-putting to those used to the hand applied paint, but when it’s done right like here, it’s definitely an upgrade. See this pic to show the difference. Now, not all faces are as bad as that first Rey, but there are a lot more mistakes and half-assed applications the old way. As Hasbro gets better with this style, we should be in for a treat. The body has good detail and clothes layering in all plastic. Articulation is solid, though the feet had weird joint locks making standing a pain. Getting her straight up, without leaning forward or backward was a challenge. Paint on the body is well applied and has range. It’s minimal in weathering but the varied neutral tones layer well. She also comes with a soft-goods cape. It’s a tad too poofy as almost all soft goods are at this scale, but with a little wax or sticky putty you can position the hood to look like it’s draping properly.
Overall it’s a really good version of Rey, and one I have on display now, worthy of shelf space.
