Star Wars Black Series Dewback with Sandtrooper Photo Review

Last year at SDCC we got a look at the next deluxe offering from Star Wars Black Series in the Dewback with Sandtrooper. Fast forward almost a year and he’s finally dropped, giving us a fully articulated 6 inch scale beast. The set is near perfect, with movement in the head, mouth, tongue and tail. The legs get forward rotation at the upper joints and hinge + swivel at the knees and ankles. Toes get a hinge as well. These allow for more subtle posing possibilities than previous releases, and in the 6 inch scale to boot! Paint is solid throughout, the green base has a brown fade into the upper part of the figure, it’s not just a solid brick of plastic. The tongue even gets some layered paint action. Reptile scaling is molded in throughout the skin at different sizes. The harness and seat are attached but flexible.

The Sandtrooper uses the existing Stormtrooper mold as a base. The plastic quality seems a bit different from previous releases, less hard and a little lighter. Not necessarily gummy has some of the exclusives have been. A wash of tan and brown is present along with dirt marks on the helmet and body. His pauldron is dark grey with dirt washes. Accessories include the backpack and rifle seen with previous Sandtroopers and a new staff that the Dewback rider had in the movie.

All in all it’s a fantastic set worthy of the extra cost. They make a great cornerstone to a Sandtrooper shelf display. It’s big but not so big that you need to rearrange everything to fit it in. And it is fun as heck to photograph with! Take him to the beach and have some fun. :)
