The latest release from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1990 Movie by NECA is their Baby Turtles 1/4 Scale Accessory Set. This release sees the four Turtles as younger versions, which we saw during a flashback story sequence in the original live action film. With 16.5″ tall versions of Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael all released, the Baby Turtles provide a nice release to hold fans over until The Shredder and Foot Soldier figures hit stores. This set includes the four Baby Turtles, four slices of pizza, a pizza box, corn chips and a new accessory for the 1/4 scale Michelangelo figure. This set is available in stores now.

Overall
Keeping the packaging design consistent with the larger figures, the Baby Turtles set comes in a collector friendly window box. The packaging is inspired by the classic poster and marketing images from the original TMNT movie. The sides and back showcase the included Baby Turtles and the accessories. Inside, they are packed in a plastic tray, with a separate tray for the accessories. Everything can be removed and placed back in easily for storage (I always find that a plus). The set includes the four Turtles, a pizza box (complete with coupon), four slices of pizza, a bag of corn chips, a sticker sheet with bandages, a new hand for the 1/4 scale Michelangelo, and a spinning nunchuck accessory for Mikey as well.
I’ve really been enjoying what NECA has been doing with the 1/4 scale TMNT line. The four main figures were all stellar releases, and this accessory set seemed like it was going to fit in really well. Whenever they popped up at toy shows or conventions, I was impressed with how nice they looked. Now that I have them in-hand, I’m please to see that the production versions turned out just as nice. The four Turtles all share the same mold, and the figures are essentially identical (outside of some identifying paint marks). EDIT: The sculpts do offer some differences. Along with identifying paint, there are also character specific shells on all four. Hard to spot initially, but a nice touch. The sculpt itself is fantastic, with a really nice amount of detail throughout. The texture work is just as good as the larger Turtles. Bottom line, they just adorable looking. Paint work is great here, with a generous amount of multi-level washes over each figure. the turtles have nice transitional work from the more saturated greens to the subtle yellow used on the skin. The carapace and shells have nice clean lines. It’s the paint work that can help you identify each turtle as well. The dots on the carapaces are different, and if you match them up to the original NECA Product Page, you can tell which figure is which.
These mini guys, which stand about 4″ tall, and feature nice solid construction. The figures are pretty much solid, with no noticeable issues when I inspected them. The Turtles do have a small amount of articulation. The shoulders have full articulation and the jaws are hinged to allow for full opening and closing. I do wish (as someone who likes to take a lot of photos) that they had just a bit more articulation, but I get that they were going for less cuts so they looked more like the film versions. The joints that are there are strong with no paint locking issues. The set does include some bandages as stickers for the little Raphael, but they wouldn’t stick on mine. The other accessories, though, are great. I loved their take on a Domino’s pizza box without having to take on a license for them. The box even features grease stains on the interior. Also included is a new hand and spinning nunchuck for the 1/4 scale Michelangelo. It’s something a lot of fans wanted, and I’m glad to see it found it’s way into the set. It works as advertised, and you can easily spin the chucks around on Mikey’s fingertip.
In the end, this is a fun release that adds some variety to their Turtles line up. The individual Baby Turtles looks great in person. The accessories offer some fun display opportunities and the addition of Mikey’s final accessory is really welcome. Check out some select photos below and the full gallery after that.
