S.H. Figuarts Majin Vegeta Photo Review

Time for our monthly S.H. Figuarts Dragonball Z session! SHF DBZ is on fire right now, with at least one release every month plus the 3 convention exclusives. Today we are going to look at the recently released Majin Vegeta. This is Vegeta’s look from the <strike>3rd</strike> 4th “season”, the Buu Saga. Vegeta sports a slimline look – solid blue gear without his Saiyan Armor on top. To go along with the earlier part of the show, he sports the Majin symbol on his forehead from when he was under Babidi’s control.

The figure is sharp, it captures the new look Vegeta took in that era. Articulation is on point, hitting all the needed spots even with the more slimline build. The headsculpt seems to be the same as the previous two Vegeta releases. We get 5 total faces, one of which is meant to be a sideways look to capture the iconic scene from when he calls out Goku to fight, but that one is hit or miss due to paint alignment of the eyes. 3 sets of hands plus a bonus hand for that call out scene are included.

One piece of feedback I have for SHF DBZ in general – lack of washing and refinement. The figures are coming out with no mold blasting, and no washing. So the result is a very shiny, raw, bright plastic. Normally when I see this, I think of cheaper, mass release figures. Ones you’d see in big-box stores for a lower price point. Now, early SHF DBZ went overboard with the washing, like first versions of Saiyan Vegeta. We don’t need that. But, the wash on Awakening Goku and the Battle Gohan were just right. On top of that, the plastic used and/or the mold blasting technique for those two – whatever was done to get the plastic to be more matte even without the wash – that is the sweet spot. Gives the look of being painted without fully painting things. We need to get back to that because recent releases (SSG Goku, SS3 Goku, Saiyan Vegeta 2, SS Vegeta 2 etc) are a little too kiddie feeling for my tastes. Oddly, this year’s Tien and Yamcha were pretty good on these fronts even without major washing.

Overall, Majin Vegeta is still a sharp piece that gives us another significant look for a core character, so he is welcome. With Majin Buu coming later this year, the Buu Saga will finally have some solid representation on the SHF shelves.
