One of the advantages of NECA’s 8″ Scale Mego Style line is that is allows them the opportunity to release figures that may not be quite as viable in the fully sculpted 7″ format. One character this works extremely well for is Freddy Krueger, who has brief moments in different outfits throughout the entire film series. Throughout the years, NECA has released a variety of alternate Freddy designs, and they have more on the horizon. Their latest version comes from A Nightmare On Elm St. Part 3: The Dream Warriors. In one of Kristen’s nightmares, her mother’s date turns out to be Freddy Krueger, sporting a full tuxedo.
NECA’s Tuxedo Freddy Krueger features a new head sculpt and a re-release of the paper mache Elm Street house, this time with a new LED light up feature. The figure is available now. The Tuxedo Freddy comes packaged in the standard clamshell packaging used for many of NECA’s Mego style releases. The backer card features art by Nathan Thomas Milliner on the front, and a picture showcasing the figure on the back. The only accessory included is a replica of the paper mache Elm Street house, which has a new LED light up feature.
The new Freddy figure is exactly what you’ve come to expect from NECA’s cloth retro style figures. The main new item here is the all-new head sculpt, which turned out great. Freddy has always been an expressive horror icon, and it’s always great to get a portrait with something more than a smile or scowl. The paint work here is sharp and clean, with nice paint washes to give the figure that crispy burned look you’d expect in a Freddy figure. The tuxedo works well, and looks very similar to the one in the film. It’s a nice thin thread, keeping it from looking too bulky. Articulation is fairly solid, and the outfit doesn’t seem to hinder the range of motion.
Included with this release is the paper mache Elm Street House. This accessory looks mostly the same to the house included with the Ultimate Part 3 Freddy Krueger. There are two main differences with this one. The base appears to be thinner, and the house now includes a light up LED feature. Batteries are included, and the light itself is fairly bright. This release would feel a bit more complete with a severed head of Kristen’s mother. Otherwise, there’s not much more needed for this release.
If you’re into the alternate looks of Freddy, then this is a great pick up. It’s well made with a fun new head sculpt that captures the horrific and creepy silliness of the film.
