In Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning, during a Tommy Jarvis dream sequence and a hallucination, we are treated to the the only appearances by the actual Jason Voorhees in the film. In the nightmare sequence, Jason emerges fro ma shallow grave to exact revenge on a young Tommy Jarvis. Later, Tommy appears to see Jason standing below his window. In the movie, a man named Roy Burns disguises himself as Jason Voorhees and goes on a murderous rampage after his son Joey is killed at Pinehurst Youth Development Center.
To hold fans over until they create a “Roy” Jason Figure, NECA has released the Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning – Dream Sequence Jason Voorhees Ultimate 7″ Scale Figure. Capturing his rain soaked look from the dream, the figure includes multiple interchangeable masks, a grave marker and some weapons. The figure is in stores now! The Dream Sequence Jason comes packaged in the standard NECA Ultimate packaging, which is a flapped window box. The front of the packaging showcases one of the alternate posters used for Friday the 13th Part V. The back showcases a few photos of the figure as well as a bit of background on it. The figure sits in a plastic tray, held in by a couple of twist ties. The figure includes a worm infested masked portrait, a dirty masked portrait, a battle damaged masked portrait, and a teaser poster inspired masked portrait. Accessories include a Jason Voorhees grave marker, an axe, a machete, an ice pick and a damaged left hand.
Many fans were initially skeptical of a Part V Jason Voorhees figure that was not based on the main appearance from the film. The dream sequence lasted only a minute a few minutes, with the actual Jason having very little screen time. Once fully revealed, the figure gained a lot of fans immediately, and much of it has to do with the four head sculpts. The body here is a heavily repainted version of their Ultimate Final Chapter Jason Voorhees Figure. The body has good articulation, but the right hip is fairly loose on mine. The big selling point of this release, and the reason I really enjoy this figure, are those masked portraits. The worm infested portrait immediately jumps out as one of the best alternate portraits they’ve ever done. It’s fun and gruesome and captures the moment perfectly. the remaining three portraits are also very well done. There’s a dirt covered version of the mask, a damaged Part IV style mask, and an outstanding mask based on the initial teaser poster, complete with red eyes. The portraits swap out quite easily, and I didn’t have to break out the hair dryer here, or for the swappable hand. Other accessories include weapons, an interchangeable battle damaged hand, and the Jason grave marker. All look great, with the grave marker being handled in a great way. having a mound of dirt as the base is just a nice touch compared to usign a small stand to hold it up. I personally wish he included an unmasked portrait of some kind, even though he’s never unmasked in the film. It just feels natural to have one of his creepy portraits included.
On a figure like this, paint work really is important. The dream Jason is rain soaked and covered in dirt. NECA does a great job of portraying that, with multiple detailed paint washes for an overly dirty look. they top it with a thin clear coat, which adds some nice shine to the figure and does a good job of looking wet. The masks (other than the very clean poster mask), feature some great paint details and may be their most heavily painted masks in the ultimate line.
There really is a lot to like about this release. It’s a nice appetizer until we get a Roy Burns as Jason figure. But with four distinct portraits, solid accessories and a great paint job, the Dream Sequence Jason is a surprising and fun addition to the Friday the 13th figure line up.
