The Cyborg Ninja is introduced in the PlayStation 1 video game Metal Gear Solid, initially as a boss character. However, as the game progresses, it is revealed that he is Gray Fox, a former ally of Solid Snake originally introduced in the original Metal Gear video game. The Cyborg Ninja disappears after his encounter with Snake, but secretly offers advice under the code name Deepthroat. He re-emerges at the end of Metal Gear Solid, attempting to help Solid Snake in his fight against Metal Gear REX. The character has had a large fan following ever since he was introduced. He featured a slick cybernetic design coupled with is lengthy blade and arm mounted rail gun. the character has seen numerous collectible releases over the years, including statues and action figures.
The newest collectible based on the Cyborg Ninja comes from Gecco. This 1/6 scale release includes a statue base, interchangeable heads, a removable sword, and a swap out right arm. The statue was released in Japan, and should hit U.S. retailers later this month. It’s priced at $299.99. Our friends at Gecco sent a sampel over to check out. Overall
As with all Gecco statues, the Cyborg Ninja comes packaged in a specialized collector box. The packaging features designs elements inspired by Metal Gear Solid. Details on Metal Gear Solid, a Cyborg Ninja Profile, and details on the artists who worked on the statue are all included on the box. The statue includes a closed mask portrait with a light up feature, an open mask portrait, a sword, a swap out gun arm, magnetic batter packs, and a stand.
Gecco has been releasing statues from the Metal Gear series for some time now. For years, their Raiden Statue remained my favorite of the group. The Cyborg Ninja is just as good as that statue. The sculpt work here is outstanding. They’ve taken the clunky polygons of the PS1 game, and the stylish concept and promo art, and mashed it up into a stellar take on the character. The statue stands a little under 12″ tall, and has a sleek cybernetic armor, that is a nice mix of human anatomy and robotic armor. Panel lines are sharply defined, with some panels mimicking armor, while others form a natural muscular shape. The closed mask head sculpt is especially smooth, with see through plastic over the eyes, where you can actually see the face underneath. There’s a light up LED light for this head, with the switch hidden inside on the neck connector. The open mask head sculpt shows off a great, scarred face sculpt. The standard right arm can hold the word either angled behind the back, or out to the side. The right arm can be swapped out for a gun arm. A small battery piece attaches to the underside of the gun. The battery packs on the hips are magnetic as opposed to using pegs to attach (keeping the sleep look intact).
The paint work on the statue is essentially perfect. Armor has a great metallic sheen to it, along with a dark wash to fill in the panel lines and muscle details. Color separation is very clean, with no noticeable paint bleed. The blue and bronze used on the body armor are bold without feeling cartoon-ish, and the masks have an extra shiny light gray color. Small type is clearly readable on the helmet and the battery packs. The plastic quality here is Gecco’s best yet. It has a fairly solid feel to it, with no pieces that felt like they were too fragile. The Cyborg Ninja easily attaches to the base, and all parts swap out with no trouble.
Gecco has another stellar outing here, with one of their best entries into the Metal Gear satue lien up. A great sculpt and paint deco, combined with easy to swap out parts make for an excellent display piece. You can see some select photos below, and the full gallery after that.
