Now available is the new Gremlins – Ultimate Gamer Gremlin Figure by NECA Toys. The new figure is a GameStop Exclusive release. It’s available in stores and via GameStop.com. The figure is priced at $29.99. This is the second Ultimate Gremlin released, and includes its own themed accessories. The Gamer Gremlin is packed with interchangeable hands, new wearable accessories, new food items, and a few great video game inspired items, including a gremlins game box. Overall
The Gamer Gremlin comes in NECA’s standard Ultimate style packaging, which is a collector friendly flapped window box. The front of the box features brand new art by Jason Edmiston, which is an homage to the classic Gremlins posters. The back includes a video game inspired series of photos, which showcase the new accessories. The figure includes interchangeable hands, a propeller hat, popcorn bucket, a cup of cola, glasses, a handheld video game, an Atari 2600 joystick, a miniature Gremlins video game box, inspired by the Atari 5200 video game release. The main figure here, is the same as the previous Ultimate Gremlin Figure. For a more detailed review of the base figure, check that review out. Here, I’ll mainly be going over the new accessories.
The Gamer Gremlin includes, mostly new accessories that really separate it from the previous Ultimate Gremlin. The only holdover is the cup of cola that was also included with the previous release. The figure includes two sets of hands, which were separately used on the Ultimate Gremlin, and the Ultimate Stripe.I like that these were included, as it gives you options for all three of new Gremlins. The rest of the accessories are all new for this release. The video game pieces are a real treat, as NECA took some great care in crafting them, with some great call backs to the 80’s. The main piece is “The Fail Guy” mini arcade, which is a stand in for the mini Donkey Kong game seen in the film. The similarities are just enough for fans to know what it is, without them having to seek a separate license for the game itself. A nice touch is that the joystick is actually movable. Next up is a small Gremlins video game box for the “NECA 3300” video game system, which is based on the Atari 5200 video game box. Outside of the re-branding, everything else about it looks to be an exact recreation of that box. The final video game piece is the Atari 2600 joystick. It’s a pretty much spot on recreation of the iconic controller.
A number of non-video game accessories are included as well. The new items include a popcorn bucket, with removable popcorn lid. Once the popcorn is removed, you can place it on the Gremlin’s head to mimic the movie scene. There are two eye holes cutout, and they line up pretty well. It doesn’t snap on, so you’ll need to balance it, but the rim is pretty wide and I didn’t have any trouble. The small cap with a propeller was another fun addition. The propeller actually spins. Beware though, as the pole that holds the propeller is very thin, especially where the propeller itself attaches. I can see this leading to breakages if a bit too much pressure is applied there. To complete the look, a set of sunglasses are also included. Those fit perfectly, as the arms of the glasses grip tightly below the ears.
If you’re a fan of the film, then this is easy to recommend, as the base figure is excellent, and there are some well made accessories included. The real fun of the figure comes from mixing the accessories together from Stripe and the previous Gremlin. for army builders, this is a great alternative to just buying the same Gremlin over and over, as you can mix and match between the two. I suspect we’ll see additional variations in the future, as there are a number of additional accessories that still haven’t been featured yet.
