After the police force goes on strike, Alex Murphy and his partner Anne Lewis are the lone officers remaining on duty to protect Old Detroit. A new drug known as Nuke begins circulating the city, with a psychopath known as Cain acting as the mastermind behind the drug’s production. With the perceived success of the Robocop program, OCP begins development on a new, more powerful Robocop. However, each test malfunctions with some of the subjects choosing suicide over being a cyborg. A rogue OCP scientist enacts her own Robocop development, using the brain of the drug kingpin Cain as the basis for the monstrous new cyborg.
Within a year of announcing their MAFEX Robocop figure, Medicom had revealed plans to release version based on Robocop 2 and Robocop 3. All three has been announced just in time for the initial release of their first Robocop figure. This gave fans of the character the chance to pick and chose which figure or figures they’d want as part of their collection. Each release has a some significant differences to make them unique. The MAFEX Robocop 2 Figure is now available, with the part 3 version set to hit this Summer.
For the Robocop 2 release, Medicom switched out a few of the hands, removing the needle spike fist, and adding two new gripping hands.The color of the armor was adjusted to have a bluer tint, and a few new accessories were added. Overall
The Robocop 2 figure is packaged in a collector friendly window box. The packaging design is very reminiscent of the Robocop 1 figure (see review and gallery HERE) they released, with updated photos and artwork to reflect the second film. The figure and accessories sit in a plastic clamshell tray. The figure includes three interchangeable lower jaws, a standard and a battle damaged visor, a standard and a battle damaged chest plate, eight interchangeable hands, an Auto-9 pistol with a flash effect piece, swap out open holster leg pieces, a pack of Nuke, a ratchet, Can’s brain, and a figure stand.
For the most part, the main Robocop figure here is the same as the previous MAFEX release. Nothing major has changed in the sculpt, outside of the new battle damaged pieces. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, as the original figure had a stunning sculpt. As with the previous release, the detail work is fairly accurate to the film, with great texture work, nice use of different materials, and excellent articulation. The metallic armor pieces have a nice gloss to them, while the black armor pieces have a more rubberized look. The biggest difference here is the recolored armor, which has a much bluer tint to it. While the tint is more “sky” blue, there is additional blue and magenta colored airbrushing on the armor as well. It doesn’t look quite as blue as the film version, but it is noticeably different than the nearly all silver part 1 figure. Either way, it still looks excellent in person.
Not surprisingly, the Robocop 2 figure includes more accessories than the first figure. From Cain’s removed Brain, to the Nuke pack, to the ratchet, there’s some great additions. The new hands are welcome, as they can also be used on the original figure if desired. The new battle damaged pieces line up to how he looked in the second film. The visor has the new burn mark on the left side, and the chest plate has a rather large dent. The lower jaw pieces, however, are the same as the first release. It would have been nice to have at least one alternate expression here.
If you’re only picking up one of the MAFEX Robocop figures, then it’s a fairly even toss up between the Robocop 1 and Robocop 2 figures. I think for many it will come down to personal preference for the armor color (I personally prefer the silver of the first figure). If you are buying all three, then there’s at least enough variation here to not feel like a straight repeat of the first figure. Check out some select photos below, and the full gallery after that.
