In the upcoming Godzilla: King of the Monsters film, Godzilla returns to face off against a number of gigantic new monsters, including King Ghidorah, who have emerged and begun to wreaking havoc around the globe. With over a dozen creatures set to appear in the film, fans can expect plenty of surprises. For 2019, NECA has been able to expand their Godzilla line beyond just Godzilla figures. Their first two additional monsters will be Mothra and Rodan, who join Godzilla as part of the Godzilla: King of the Monsters figure line.
The Godzilla figure is now shipping to retailers, with Mothra scheduled to ship out at the end of the month. Our friends at NECA have sent over their new Godzilla, as well as an advanced sample of Mothra from the new film. Check out a full review and hi-res photo gallery after the jump.

Overall
The new King of the Monsters figures are packaged in a themed flapped window box, similar to their Ultimate releases. Each release from the film will share the same packaging design, just with specific art swapped out to reflect the character. The figures sit on plastic trays. Godzilla includes no accessories. Mothra includes a cocoon display base and a flight stand. When initially solicited, Mothra listed a Larvae form figure that would be included, but it seems that was dropped prior to release.
Godzilla
NECA kicked off their Godzilla line with the release of the 2014 Legendary Pictures Godzilla. For the sequel’s figure, NECA decided to sculpt an entirely new figure. The 2019 Godzilla is definitely taller than the 2014 version, with more detailed sculpting and a better range of motion in the articulation. The tail was completely reworked and is more seamless looking now. The new dorsal fin design, which evokes a more classic Godzilla look, comes through great here. Sculpting overall is nicely detailed, with nicely defined detail work, especially on the scales. There’s about 22 points of articulation, including two neck ball joints, an articulated waist, a hinged jawand a fully adjustable tail. Range of motion is solid.
Paint work is mostly on the gray side, with a subtle tan wash over the entire figure. I’ve seen some people have eye paint issues, but I didn’t have the same problems. No accessories are included. In the bigger window box, it feels a bit bare. I know a repainted version is coming with an atomic blast effects, but it would still have been a nice addition here as well.
Mothra
This wound up being a very unique figure, simple because of the general size of the main Mothra body. By keeping Mothra in scale with Godzilla, she wound up being quite small, with the impressive wingspan making up most of the visual appeal. However, that doesn’t mean that details were skipped. For how tiny the Mothra body is, the sculpted details are fantastic. There’s small detail work on the head and body, and nice slender appendages. The front and back legs both feature ball joint connectors to the body, with most of the motion restricted to front-to-back movement. The wings are huge here, with strong connector hinges that allow them to be displayed in any way you want. There’s actually a small set of wings underneath the main ones. Both sets have just a tiny bit of translucency to them, with beautiful paint work. The paint on the main body is a little more simplified, but looks really nice in-hand.
Mothra includes an open cocoon display base, which I used to sit Mothra in, and I really liked the look of those two pieces like that. It gives it the look of her merging from the cocoon itself. However, there is a clear plastic stand that can attach to the base, and you can snap Mothra in at the midsection for flight posing. It’s very sturdy, even with the wings fully spread out.
In the end, these two make a great kick off to the expanded Godzilla line. The main Godzilla figure looks great in person. Mothra is handled very nicely, especially for the smaller size. The figures are priced about $23 each. Look for the Rodan figure later this year, and hopefully more figures to be announced after the films release.
