NECA Superman vs Alien SDCC 2019 Exclusive Set – Toyark Photo Shoot

Playing catch up with some of the back log I have. Today I am happy to share my photo shoot of the Superman vs Alien 2-Pack from NECA. This set is part of the convention exclusive DC Comics vs Dark Horse Comics sets that NECA is producing. When originally announced, the 2-packs were meant to be retail releases. However, licensing issues caused the sets to be delayed. Ultimately, NECA was able to negotiate the release of each set, though only as convention exclusives. This set was a San Diego Comic-Con 2019 Exclusive, along with a Batman vs Predator set (gallery coming soon). The 2-pack is based on the Superman vs Aliens comics, which had two series. The first was in 1995, while the second series debuted in 2002.

With this set, you get a newly sculpted Superman figure, as well as an Alien Warrior figure. Superman includes a few interchangeable parts, such as different portraits, hands, and heat vision effects. Our friends at NECA provided the figures for review. Overall
I’ve been a fan of the few 7″ scale DC figures that have been released by NECA. For the most part, their 7″ scale DC figures have been limited to a few figures based on the movie versions, with an Arkham series Harley released as well. With these 2-packs, NECA was able to try their hand at pure comic book inspired versions of Superman, Batman, and Green Lantern. With this 2-pack, you get Superman, and a repainted version of the Resurrection Alien Warrior.

For many fans, the main draw of this set is, without a doubt, the Superman figure. Standing about 7″ tall, this figure has roughly 30 points of articulation. The articulation itself is some on NECA’s best, reminding me of their Street fighter figures from years ago. You get double jointed knees and elbows, ab-crunch, and more. The articulation is integrated fairly well into the figure sculpt, which is excellent. The figure is extremely muscular, with a look that calls back to the late 90’s era of Superman art of Dan Jurgens. The cape is a thin fabric that hangs nicely off the shoulders. Thankfully, the cape is not overly stiff, and it’s easy to get nice natural look when posing, especially when using a figure stand to simulate flight poses. Paint apps are really strong here, with a vibrant blue, red and yellow combination on the classic costume. NECA went with very minimal paint washes here so that the colors remain bright. Paint work on the head sculpts is excellent as well, with clean sharp lines defining the eyes and hairline. Superman includes a pair of fist, and a pair of flat hands for flight posing. There is a standard head sculpt, and an angry head sculpt, which has two interchangeable heat vision beams. Parts swap out with little to no trouble.

The included Alien figure uses the new Resurrection Alien figure as its base. It has a vastly different color scheme compared to the figure released in the Alien Resurrection assortment. The dome here is a deep purple color, while the Alien itself has a dark gray base. As is common with NECA’s Aliens, there is a lot of paint detailing applied. There are numerous colors used as paint washes, giving hints of blue, silver, and tan throughout. It’s no surprise that the figure has excellent articulation, as has become standard on their Xenomorph figures. The bendable tail also helps in stabilizing the figure while standing.

With the set, you get an phenomenal superman figure, and a worthy addition to the Alien army. Right now, it’s one of the best comic inspired Superman figures you can own at this scale.
