Mothra vs Godzilla (1964) – Godzilla Figure by NECA – Toyark Photo Shoot

Making its way to retailers now is the latest Godzilla 12″ Head-To-Tail Figure by NECA Toys. Their latest addition to the Godzilla line up is based on his appearance in Mothra vs Godzilla (1964). The figure is packed in all-new flapped window box packaging. The figure is already available directly from the NECA eBay Store and the NECA Amazon Store. However, it should hit retail shelves within the next week or so.

In the film, a greedy land developer uses large machines to begin emptying parts the ocean near Tokyo. His plan is to use the new land for a series of luxury condos. During a hurricane, the massive egg of Mothra is displaced from Infant Island. It drifts to Tokyo and washes up on its shore. The developer uses the egg a a tourist attraction. Tiny twin girls known as the Shobijin reveal themselves, and beg for the egg to be returned to its home, fearing the hatch lings could wreak havoc in search of food.

When Godzilla reemerges, an dying Mothra is sent to help protect Tokyo by the Shobijin. After a fierce battle, Mothra is killed, and Godzilla continues his rampage. When all seems lost, the egg hatches and two Mothra Larvae emerge and follow Godzilla to Iwa Island. There they trap him with their silk spray, and force Godzilla to return to the sea once more. After the battle, the Shobijin take the Larvae to Infant Island where they belong.

Overall
Like all new Godzilla releases, the figure is packed in a nice flapped window box. The front of the box features the Japanese poster for the film, while the back showcases a few photos of the figure. The figure sits on a plastic tray, and includes an atomic breath effects piece.

I’ve always enjoyed NECA’s Godzilla releases, and their newly developed figures from 2019 have been pretty fantastic. The 1964 Godzilla is no exception, with a fantastic sculpt that does a great job of emulating the look from the film. While the movie serves as a follow-up to King Kong vs Godzilla (1962), the look of Godzilla is quite different. Starting at the head sculpt, the figure gets a lot right. The sculpt nails the cartoon-ish look of Godzilla, right down to the oddly smooth eyebrows. The neck has that crumpled rubber costume look that was very present in the film, and the overall body shape looks very much like a man in a suit. The sculpt is nicely detailed overall, and is on par with what you’d expect from NECA at this point. Articulation is pretty much the same as all recent figures, and fans should be happy with the segmented tail, which moves much more naturally than older releases. The way the details are sculpted seems to have given some extra range of motion in the torso and waist areas.

Paint work is excellent, with clean lines separating areas like the eyes, mouth, and nails. The figure has a number of heavy washes over it, adding depth to the sculpt work. The lighter color washes over top look almost dry brushed on, and work especially well on the fins. Thankfully, I didn’t run into any issues with the figure. Joints are solid, and nothing felt noticeably loose. None of the joints on this figure required any heating to loosen up. The atomic breath piece sits perfectly in his jaws.

This is another solid Godzilla release from NECA. It has a nice sculpt, solid paint work, good articulation, and stellar packaging. Check out a selection of photos below, and the full gallery after that.
