Exclusive First Look at The Goonies Sloth and Chunk 2-Pack by NECA

The Goonies was released in 1985, and featured a stellar cast of young actors, as well as some of Holywood’s best behind the camera. The film is directed by Richard Donner, with a story by Stephen Spielberg, and a screenplay by Chris Columbus. The film stars young actors such as Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin, Martha Plimpton and quite a few others. It follows a group of friends who go on an adventure, hoping to find riches to save their neighborhood from being demolished by a wealthy developer. Along the way, they run into a mother and two brothers called the Fratelli’s, a family of career criminals. When Chunk is captured, he is put with the third Fratelli brother; Sloth. The movie has remained a favorite of kids and kids a heart, with a fun story of friendship and family, and a great sense of action and adventure from a kid’s perspective.

NECA Toys is releasing a special The Goonies 8″ Scale Figure 2-Pack, featuring Sloth and Chunk. The set begins shipping to retailers in January 2020. Our friends at NECA have sent over the set, giving us the exclusive chance to share our thoughts, as well as a full gallery. Check out the set after the jump.

The 2-pack comes packed in a collector friendly window box. The box itself features graphics inspired by the pirate map the kids find. The back showcases Sloth, Chunk, and their included accessories. The set features pirate hats for both figures, two swords, and a damaged statue of David.

Sloth and Chunk both make great use of the retro clothed figure style. These are figures NECA would likely never attempt otherwise, and they made sure it was a worthwhile effort here. To that end, the set features a fairly big surprise, and one I want to talk about before I get into the meat of the review. Sloth is using a whole new body style. The upgraded body type features far better articulation than the previous two style NECA has employed for their clothed figure. Immediately noticeable are the double jointed elbows. The upgrades don’t stop there, as Sloth has ankle rockers, far better torso articulation, new hip joints that allow the legs to swivel, and stronger overall joint connections. The improvements are immediately apparent as soon as I started posing Sloth, every joint felt smoother, range of motion was better, and those ankle rockers were really needed for balancing these types of figures.

Outside of the new body, these are both great takes on the characters from the film. The new head sculpts by Trevor Grove are excellent, with a great expressions, and nice sharp sculpted details. Sloth’s likeness is a little better than Chunk’s, but both are still well done. The cloth elements are another step forward, as each release seems to use better, and thinner materials, making the clothing look more natural. Sloth, especially, comes off nicely here. The sleeveless Superman shirt is great to see, as that was definitely an added licensing hurdle. Sloth also has ripped and torn pants, and some suspenders. Chunk has a great nylon jacket, with a Hawaiian shirt underneath. Underneath, there’s some padding to add a bit of extra bulk to the clothing. Paint work on both figures is handled well, with great paint apps on the face. The eyes have crisp and sharp paint lines, and there’s nice color transitions in areas like the cheeks.

The pirate hats fit each figure perfectly. There are two identical swords included, and they fit the hands well. The grips are nice and tight, so there’s no fear of the weapons falling out. Also included is Mrs. Walsh’s statue of David, complete with his damaged groin. The statue is surprisingly well detailed for something that small. I really would have loved to see an additional head sculpt for Sloth, one where he’s not as happy looking.

The set turned out to be a very fun addition to the retro clothed line up. The new body style for sloth is excellent, and both figures are in the top tier of NECA’s clothed line. I do hope NECA continues the license, with the remaining Goonies as 2-packs. Check out a selection of photos below, and the full gallery after that.
