Disney Select – The Rocketeer Figure by Diamond Select Toys – Toyark Photo Shoot

The new Disney Select line of figures from Diamond Select Toys features characters from two memorable Disney films. Series 1 includes figures from The Black Hole (gallery coming soon) and The Rocketeer. Today, I’m taking a look at The Rocketeer 7″ Scale Figure. The movie was released in 1991, and follows stunt pilot Cliff Secord in 1938 Los Angles. Cliff stumbles onto a prototype jet pack, and uses it to become a masked hero, attracting the attention of Howard Hughes, the FBI, and Nazi’s, who are all after the jet pack.

Our friends at Diamond Select Toys provided the figure for review. The Rocketeer includes a masked and an unmasked portrait, swap out chest pieces, multiple interchangeable hands, jet pack effects pieces, and blueprints for the jet pack. Overall
The Rocketeer Figure is packed in DST’s book style Select Figure packaging. The Rocketeer includes four sets of hands, including bare hands and and a gun grip hand, both a masked and an unmasked head sculpt, jet pack blueprints, interchangeable chest pieces, two fire effects pieces for the jet pack, and a blast off effect piece for the jet pack. The blast off effect piece also functions a display stand.

I’ve been pretty impressed with the last few DST figures I’ve gotten to review. The Tron Select figures were excellent, and the new Rocketeer is a solid addition to the figure shelf. With the helmet on, the figure looks excellent. The sculpt is really detailed, with varying textures on the different clothing types, and natural looking wrinkles and folds on the clothing. The sculpt on the helmet looks great to me, and seems to be pretty accurate to the film. Articulation is excellent for a select figure, with things like elbows that are double jointed, ankle rockers, and more. The joints have range of motion, and it’s easy to get solid flight poses, especially when you use the blast off piece. There’s no ab crunch here, but that’s ok with me. None of the joints I had were paint locked, and nothing was loose. Parts swapped out with no trouble. I’m always happy when I don’t need to bust out the hairdryer to pose a figure or change out hands. Paint work on these areas is really solid, with some nice layered paint on the whole figure.

There’s some great accessories and swap out pieces here. The variety of hands is nice, and offers some good display options. I really liked the blast off effect piece. While light weight, it holds the figures weight with no trouble, and makes a perfect shelf display when attached. The jet pack blueprints are a nice touch as well. You can easily use some double sided tape to mount that to a dio wall, or just place it on a desk (as I did). The jet pack, according to at show displays, looks like it is supposed to be removable. The two chest display options point to that as well, as one is all buttoned up, with the other slightly unbuttoned for when the jet pack is off. However, at least on mine, the spot where the pegs meet on the strap was glued or paint locked. I couldn’t tell. This is where I did have to break out the hairdryer. I used that to loosen that up and the jet pack eventually was removable. I had to use the hairdryer to soften up the pieces to put the pack back on, but it did snap back in and looks just fine. The unmasked head sculpt is a miss for me, as it doesn’t much look like actor Bill Campbell, and the paint isn’t as good as the rest of the figure. I’d have been fine if it wasn’t included as I’m only going to display it with the helmet on anyway. No gun is included with the figure, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that was Disney’s call and not DST’s.

Overall, this is a pretty solid release. I like the overall look of the figure, and really liked some of those accessories. If you can find a figure that already has a Mauser or even a Luger pistol (I had neither), then that should work perfectly with the figure.
