In September 1984, Iron Maiden released Powerslave, their fifth studio album. It contained hit songs like 2 Minutess 2 Midnight and Aces High. The cover art for the album featured an Egyptian theme, with Eddie as the centerpiece of a massive monument. The theme was carried over to the subsequent World Slavery Tour, which ran from August 1984 until July 1985. The Egyptian themed Eddie became part of the band’s set for the duration for the tour.
NECA Toys took the album cover and imagery from the world tour, and used it to create their own version of a Pharaoh Eddie. The figure is part of their 8″ scale clothed figure line. Overall
The Powerslave Eddie figure comes packed in a collector friendly window box. The packaging makes great use of the Powerslave album art. The figure sits in a plastic tray, and can easily be put back into the packaging for storage or display. It includes a staff, and a sword.
Much like the previous World Slavery Tour Eddie figure (released in 2014), the Pharaoh Eddie features Mummy-like fabric bandages wrapped around the entire figure. Unlike that figure, these bandages are very thin, and are very tightly wrapped around the figure. It’s an amazing look, and one I’d love to see carried over to a classic Universal Monsters Mummy. However, the tight wrap does make it hard to pose the figure, especially the legs. Granted, there’s not much the figure needs to do outside of holding his sword and staff properly, which he does. The wrappings are heavily weathered with paint and frayed. It’s a nice aged look that is a stark contrast to the brightly colored blue and gold used on the headdress and skirt. The head sculpt is another really solid take on Eddie, with excellent paint work. The face of Eddie features a number of washes to bring out the thick wrinkles on his face, while the headdress is much cleaner looking.
The figure includes two accessories. The staff has a faux gold look to it. The base of the staff pops off, making it a lot easier for the hands to grip it. The staff is a sturdy plastic, with no warping. Also included is a khopesh, a traditional Egyptian sickle-sword. The blue and gold coloring from the figure is carried over here. Like the staff, this is a harder, sturdy plastic which should make warping a lot less likely. The hands grip both items pretty tightly as well.
This is another really solid Ion Maiden release from NECA. The figure looks fantastic in-hand and features a great mummified fabric technique I hope we see again in future figures. The Powerslave Eddie is priced at $30. It ships out to retailers at the end of the month. It should be on shelves by early July.
