In 2017, director Andy Muschietti delivered a terrifying new take on Stephen King’s iconic novel; IT. The film chronicled the early parts of the book, featuring a group of kids known as The Losers Club, taking on an otherworldly clown known a Pennywise. Two years later, the story was completed when IT Chapter 2 was released. In the film, Pennywise returns to Derry 27 years after being defeated by the kids of The Losers Club. When the now grown up group learns that Pennywise has returned, they have to honor their pact. The emotionally scarred crew heads home, where they must face their old fears, and a Pennywise who is more powerful and dangerous than he has ever been.

NECA is releasing a new figure based on Pennywise from the film. The new figure features four interchangeable head sculpts, multiple interchangeable hands, and a balloon accessory. While they released multiple figures from the first film, it sounds like this may be the lone release for IT Chapter 2. Our friends at NECA have sent the figure over for us to check out. Overall
Pennywise is packed in a collector friendly flapped window box. The front features artwork based on the film, while the back shows off the new portraits included with the release. The figure sits on a plastic tray, held in by some twist ties. Pennywise includes a smiling portrait, an evil grinning portrait, a long tongue portrait, and a Pennywise origin head sculpt. Also included are seven interchangeable hands, and a balloon accessory.

For the IT Chapter 2 Pennywise, NECA modeled the figure after the looks mostly seen in the initial trailer for the film, as to avoid spoilers for later in the movie. They also updated the body sculpt from their first film releases, adjusting the proportions a bit. It’s hard to tell the differences without having some of the other ones side-by-side. for this gallery, I shot him next to the initial IT 2017 Pennywise. The final figure, though is a really solid overall Pennywise. The sculpt is nicely detailed throughout, and the bulkier sculpted areas are a more flexible plastic to allow for greater range of motion. Pennywise features just about 30 points of articulation. There’s double jointed knees and elbows, ankle rockers, and a ball jointed torso. Range of motion is solid, and there wasn’t a pose I wanted to do that I couldn’t pull off. Paint work on the figure itself is a step up from Part 1, with more detailed washes on the costume.

The four head sculpts are outstanding, especially the evil grin head sculpt which is up there as one of the top Pennywise portraits. The paint work is excellent as well. The faces look to be using a mix of traditional hand painting and digital print tech. The details are sharp and clean, with some great detail work on the eyes. Other then the portraits, the figure includes seven hands, most of which look to be from previous releases. However, I will note that I had a much easier time with the balloon holding hand. The wire slipped right into the hole without requiring any force on my part. After the movie came out, there were some great scenes that would have functioned well as accessories. I think, most notably, was the Spider Head homage to John Carpenter’s The Thing. As is, it’s about in line with the number of accessories from previous Pennywise releases. I tested the figure with a few accessories and head sculpts from previous releases. Specifically the spider arms and Deadlights portrait from the Dancing Clown Pennywise, and they all worked perfectly well. I also tested two of the head sculpts with the Sewer grate and busty stand from the IT Accessory Set, and I’m happy to report those worked without any trouble.

With this IT Chapter 2 release, NECA has probably their best looking Pennywise yet. Judging this on its own, and not against previous IT releases, this is an excellent addition to the Ultimate Horror line. But, there have been a number of modern Pennywise releases over the last year. If you only grabbed one (or none) of the previous Pennywise releases, then this figure is a highly recommended pick up for the horror shelf. If you’ve got a few Pennywise’s already, then it’s going to depend on personal preference.
