Available in stores now is the King Kong 7″ Scale Figure by NECA Toys. The figure is an original design based on the iconic character. The basic story of King Kong sees a group of explorers that finds a massive gorilla on Skull Island, a land where time seems to have stood still. Kong becomes infatuated with Ann Darrow, and protects her from the dangers of the island. The creature is captured, and brought to New York, where it escapes and causes havoc. Kong climbs the empire state building and a battle takes place with planes attacking from all sides, causing him to fall to his death. King Kong has been portrayed as an adversary to Godzilla, both in the 1962 classic King Kong vs Godzilla, and the upcoming Godzilla vs Kong.
The new figure stands over 8″ tall, and features head sculpts that pay homage to the vintage look, and one that has a more modern aesthetic. The figure also includes two sets of interchangeable hands. Today we have a full gallery and review of the new King Kong figure. Ou friends at NECA have sent the figure over to check out. Read on for the pics and my thoughts.
King Kong 7″ Scale Figure by NECA Toys
Pros
- Excellent sculpt
- Solid articulation and range of motion
- Great paint work
- Easy to swap out parts
- Vintage and modern style portraits are a nice touch
Cons
- Doesn’t scale that well with their Godzilla figures
Overall
The figure is packaged in a flapped window box packaging, much like their Deluxe and Ultimate figures. The box features all original art and design elements, since none of the movies are being directly referenced. As mentioned above, the figure includes two swap out portraits, and two sets of interchangeable hands.
King Kong is an impressive figure in-hand. The sculpt is highly detailed, with nicely sculpted fur and skin texture. The portraits are handled well. The vintage style one is really close in design to the 1933 King Kong, while the modern style one could easily represent the Skull Island or Peter Jackson versions. I would have liked at least one more portrait that had a closed mouth, but the two that are here look great. Articulation is pretty good, as there’s nothing sculpted that hinders the range of motion. The elbows have that odd middle piece we’ve seen in a lot of their double jointed elbows, but it’s hidden fairly well thanks to the forearm and bicep sculpts. The torso is ball jointed, the knees are double jointed, and the feet have rocker style ankles. Getting fighting and other dynamic poses is pretty easy as there’s good range of motion overall, and the joints are tight without feeling like their locked. The paint deco does a nice job of highlighting the sculpt work. While the majority of the figure is a very dark gray, there are different dry brushed colors on the fur that adds a nice bronze highlight to the hair. There are also nice dark paint washes that add extra depth to wrinkles and fur.
My only real issue is with just how tall the figure is. Since they don’t have a Godzilla vs Kong license, and can’t do a direct Skull Island version, this is likely the only Kong sculpt we’ll get to pair with their previous Godzilla releases. As you can see in the gallery pics, Kong stands noticeably taller and bulkier than both the 1962 and 2019 Godzilla figures. You can fudge it a bit in photos a bit, as I propped the 1962 figure up to make him look taller. It’s not a deal breaker by any means, but it’s something to be aware of when buying it.
The figure is an overall excellent addition to a creature display. While it’s a bit on the tall side, the sculpt and paint work are spot on. The figure has plenty of poseablity as well, making it a fun figure to pose and display. You can check out a selection of photos below, and the full gallery after that.
