DC Multiverse Metal Mega Gallery – Robin Crow, The Merciless, Metal Batman, Infected Superman and More! - The Toyark

Time for our last round of late 2020 McFarlane Toys DC Multiverse galleries! Today is all about the Dark Nights Metal sub theme. It also features McFarlane’s fist dip into the buildable figure angle, which they are calling Collect to Build (CTB). Split among 4 figures in the wave, you get parts to build out a larger than average “The Merciless” – which is Batman from another Dark Earth that defeated and took on the powers of Ares, God of War, in order to battle Wonder Woman and the Amazons. McFarlane Toys DC Multiverse Dark Nights Metal Figures – Overall Thoughts

YEP. It took me a bit to finally catch up on the Metals thread of the books, but I did and went all in. It was a great story by the artist and writer from the New 52 Batman run, Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo,which I also followed in real time front to back. Some of the best Batman work ever.

These figures are super faithful to their appearances in the books. There might be some scale issues with Devastator, but otherwise it’s on point. I was very surprised they went this deep with the line up so quickly, we basically have Batman, all the Dark Batmen, Robin Crows and now even some others like Grim Knight and Infected Superman in hand. Only one missing is The Drowned, but she is done and coming. By early next year you can have the complete set up. That’s rare in figure form, something always happens and you’re left hanging half done, but not this time, so kudos on that.

In terms of figures, these continue the trend with McFarlane’s DC Multiverse getting better over time. Sculpt is top notch on them all. Paint is excellently applied. We have scale being paid attention to. Articulation varies on them, but bottom line is they can do almost anything you need/want. The Infected Superman is fantastic in that regard, and I can’t wait for them to redo him with a normal head and non-infected colors (See my photoshop of what that could look like below). The Merciless is well done as a ~~Build A Figure~~ Collect to Build offering. Range is a tad limited, but not much. Paint is full on head to toe, no short cuts. It’s an impressive piece, and the fact it’s something you put together makes it more so. I think Devastator should be bigger after research, so I wish they did him like this too. Sky Tyrant has some Sephiroth vibes going on, and it’s well executed. While only seen briefly on a cover, it was cool art and is a cool figure to mess around with.

The Robins are also excellently done. Good range of articulation and rubber torso with joints underneath allow for a full range of weird creepy poses to go with those weird creepy faces. The metal chains are a nice touch. The three different heads are packed randomly. I ordered 5 on Amazon, and of those 5, only got 2 different ones. Had to hit eBay and buy a guaranteed set of 3 at above retail to secure the third head. While I appreciate the hunt for things you don’t really need, I felt this was something that was needed. There are multiple Robin Crows in the books, and having 3 heads to differentiate them in a display is important. So for this, I would have liked them all just to be packed in one box, and you apply as needed. In the end, I had to buy 8 and resell 5 to get them. Not fun. Totally worth it though, because having them chained up and being held by TBWL behind them is awesome on the shelf. Centerpiece display.

Batman – this is pretty close to the modern era Batman, it’s a semi standard current suit. The head is a bit weird to match the art in that book, he has a rounded front cowl and really grimacing face. Articulation is good, sculpt is highly detailed if you look close. The axes are specific to cover art from Metals. Torso cut is a tad thick again. Overall it’s a solid Batman, but not “the one” yet.

The last was the Red Death / Flash 2 pack. Cool, but we just got Flash single packed. Yes, he’s got a new head and hands, but really I’d have preferred Red Death solo. The diorama piece that comes with it is cool, but a little plain. Some washing or varied paint would make it work for universal photography purposes. Would be nice to get those over time and have them work together, so you could build out a battle rubble pile / zone / street etc.

Bottom line, I’ve really enjoyed this little sub theme of the Multiverse line. They’ve been some of the best yet from McFarlane’s Multiverse, it’s right up their alley in tone. The conversion to toys shows that. I eagerly await The Drowned to complete the line up! And then of course, there is Death Metal which looks equally as bonkers as a book and as toys, and that’s already in progress, so stay tuned!
