DC Multiverse May Update 2 - Batman Beyond, John Stewart, Bizarro, Injustice & More! - The Toyark

McFarlane is not playing around with this DC stuff, a lot is releasing this year and specifically over the last month or so. Last week we took a look at 7 figures. Today we are looking at 8 more. This round is a mixed bag of themes. Several from Wave 5 single releases including John Stewart Green Lantern, Bizarro (see Joker Nightwing in last week’s gallery). Then we have two Batman Beyond figures – variants of each other. One is a Collect To Build release and one has additional effects and a stand, each with a different head. A two pack featuring a repaint of Dark Nights Devastator and a wave 1 Superman reprint with a new head. And to wrap it all up, the first two Injustice video game figures of The Flash and Gorilla Grodd.

Overall Thoughts:

Batman Beyond(s) – Overall I dig it. Very sharp lines, articulation is there. A little more bendy would be nice, but can’t get there without major articulation style changes. Wings are good, and the pegs into the wings on the arms work well. Only negative is you can’t detach the wings easily (or at all, didn’t try hard). Splitting these guys up into two releases goes back to that collector vs business angle, I understand but ugh. Same figure. CTB has the battle mask head and two circular Batarangs. The single release has no CTB parts, a flight stand, standard head, feet flight effects and a standard Batarang. Together they are a great set of options for Terry McGinnis Batman. I’ll save the CTB thoughts for when it’s complete.

Bizarro – Again sharp. Using his Rebirth look and a mold starting point of the Infected Superman, but not a straight repaint. I like that body better for Superman, hopefully they get there down the line.

Devastator Vs. Superman 2 Pack – This is a cool way to reuse the molds. Slightly different paint, get a Dark Night and core look in one pack. This Devastator has less paint on it, the first one was head to toe. Here they use a base plastic and paint over it in key areas, washes. It’s cool, but I prefer the first’s matte finish and darker tones. Superman is the same as the wave 1 Action 1000 figure with a new head. Colors are the same. The head here is much better, and for whatever reason I was able to get some cool posing with him this go around. The chest/shoulder transition always bothered me before but I was able to get it posed out where it was less weird this time. It also comes with a mini Diorama piece which is well done.

Green Lantern John Stewart – Winner! This guy takes the cake of this batch. Really sharp head to toe. Sculpt, articulation, paint, all tops. He has some Lantern effect pieces, but not crazy. Also based on his Rebirth look, a non Batman comic line up is SLOWLY working it’s way out in DC Multiverse. Flash, Green Lantern, Superman together really ooze that Justice League primary color get up. Pick a Batman, and toss in Last Knight Wonder Woman and you are close.

Injustice Flash and Grodd – The video game angle is strong with DCM. They went back for the greatest hits with Arkham, and now we are moving into Injustice. These guys are well done and capture their game looks. Not sure I need them in my line up right now, but if they are moving off shelves and fans out there want them, then cool. Grodd is especially impressive in person, just looks tough. McFarlane knows something about angry Gorillas.

Bottom line – little something for everyone here. I’ve enjoyed most of the Batman themed releases to date, even though the line is heavy with it. The traditional look, comic inspired releases have got me the most hype lately. Maybe because they are less frequent. But Stewart, Bizarro, Batman Beyond here were my favs. Damian Wayne Robin, Red Hood, The Flash before that. Those are all really solid DC representations and I hope they expand that sub theme down the line. Modern, non-altverse, classic looks for core characters. With a tad less Batman.
