McFarlane Toys DC Multiverse figures have been dropping pretty much non stop all year, and there are a ton more on the way. The folks over there were kind enough to send through a HUGE box of preview figures so we are going to start digging into them today. I’ve been a bit busy of late, and the way I shoot takes a bit longer than the average quick pic, so some of these may be out somewhere in the world. This round we are taking a look at the Target(?) Exclusive Year Two Batman and the first wave of Three Jokers figures – Batman, The Clown, The Criminal, and Red Hood. Of all the recent stuff, these were some of my most desired so I jumped right in!
Read on to check them out along with some quick thoughts. We’ll be sharing out other new stuff over the next couple weeks so stay tuned!
DC Multiverse Year Two Batman and Three Jokers Wave 1
Batman Year Two Overall Thoughts
We won’t go into the whole “Target cancelled the orders” situation, let’s assume this guy will get out to the masses down the road.
The best of both worlds. The figure comes with two configurations in one box – big giant mega sculpted cape which matches a two page spread from the Year Two comic that McFarlane did AND a soft goods fabric cape. Both are well done for what they are. I personally love well done sculpted capes, I just want to be able to swap them out when needed for pics. This set let’s you do that. I really hope they utilize this more down the road. The figure itself has a new base body sculpt that captures the classic form – no tactical gear or kevlar present. While I don’t want too many retro looking figures like this one, it is nice having a super classic, traditional Batman on shelf now. The head sculpt is also top notch. The base is well done, but I found the peg holes for the feet don’t keep him in place, and the extra stand pulls him forward. Getting him solid can be done, but it will take some fiddle time. Bottm line tho, this is a fantastic piece.
Three Jokers – The Clown, The Criminal & Red Hood Overall Thoughts
While this is more Batman, and it’s story specific, it is very traditional in looks for a modern book. They story has a mystery surrounding three different Jokers, all of which could be the real one, or maybe all are the real ones (no spoilers). The Clown has a very 66 Batman vibe, The Criminal is a bit more sinister, and the Comedian (not seen here) is somewhere in between. On the figure front, I really dig the sculpt on the Clown, especially the head, but the colors are a bit too much. The Criminal is my least favorite of the three, his stance is a bit pudgy and the face looks overly old, even for the book’s look. The plastic also has a variation depending on what part it is. Both Jokers however have great face paint, well applied and works well.
Red Hood is a sharp Red Hood, which we’ve had several of in the DCM line already. Captures the look from the story well. He was un-hooded a lot, so expect one without hood, but with eye mask down the road. He does NOT come with guns, or holsters. This is an ongoing issue, I’d bet from DC or it’s parent company corporate offices. Not 100% sure. Either way, someone needs to figure it out, as collector level figures should not have this applied. His gun toting ways played a big part in the story these figures are based on. The crowbar was actually used in book, so it’s an accurate accessory. The silver guns from the first DCM Red Hood are a bit too big, but the Thomas Wayne Batman guns work perfectly.
Batman is legit. This is what I am personally looking for – traditional get up from modern times. Want that for all the core characters, Justice League+ and their rogues gallery. This is my favorite Batman to date, slightly beating out the Year Two due to it’s modern vibe, but it’s a bit beefy. Arms are forced out due to musculature, legs are a bit long in the tooth. Head sculpt is good though, and sculpting is sharp in all areas. It’s replacing my Dark Nights Metal Axey Batman as the primary DCM on shelf now.
Not seen here – The Comedian Joker and Batgirl from Three Jokers. Looking foward to both.
Bottom line – great figures. Year Two for total presentation and functionality, Three Jokers Bats for modern style. Rest are solid modern takes.
Check them for yourself below, and stay tuned over the coming days and weeks for more DC Multiverse galleries, we have a lot here to work through!
