DC Multiverse Gallery Round Up - Rebirth Batman, Jace Fox Batman, Dark Detective Batman & More! - The Toyark

McFarlane DC Multiverse Late March 2022 1

Another round of DC Multiverse figures to take a look at today! McFarlane hasn’t been doing traditional waves with 6 or 8 figures per case, so this is just a mix match of random recent releases. Some have worked their way out to retail, some are about to hit. Included inside are Rebirth Batman, The Next Batman (Jace Fox), Dark Detective Batman, Zur-En-Arrh Batman, Infinite Frontier Robin, Solar Suit Superman, Rebirth Zod, Death of the Family Joker, and McFarlane Design Wonder Woman (Gold Label). Some come courtesy of McFarlane Toys (thanks) and I picked up a couple at retail myself.

Overall Thoughts:

Rebirth Batman – OK, how to do this. Love it. Has issues. Love it, but has issues. Love the streamline sculpt. Love the flush torso cut. Head sculpt is sharp AF. Colors pop. This is what I’m looking for in DC Multiverse if executed well. Modern but core looks. However, issues. First – he’s smaller than almost every other DC Multiverse figure. Not just height, but overall heft. It feels like he’s a smaller scale than the rest of the line. To tell the truth, I’m ok with that, if it was consistent. But as of right now, he just looks a bit out of place standing along with everyone else. Coupled with any Damien Robin, who has a slightly bigger head anyway, and it’s way off base. Not sure how this happened, or why, but I’d love another run of him upscaled like 7-10 percent or so. On top of this, even within this new by-its-self scale – the head seems a tad, just a tad, small. So love it, but those things stand out for me keeping it from perfection. “THE ONE” has yet to make his appearance after all.

The Next Batman (Jace Fox) – Dig it, but also some issues. Scale is right overall, but head is way too small. I popped on the John Stewart head, and it works well. But then he’s holding a masked head, which is smaller than the unmasked head. No good. Looks off anyway you do it. Other than that, great figure. Nice clean suit, sharp colors. I dig the story so far, so hopefully we get an unmasked version later with proper proportions. Maybe toss in a new masked head there too, right size, with same peg port as this one so we can switch them out. That would be a nice hook up for fans supporting the line.

Dark Detective Batman – Also dig this storyline, so good to have him here. No complaints – he does what he needs to do. AND… drumroll… thigh cuts! I didn’t realize how much I missed them while posing until I was running this guy for the photo shoot. PLEASE, more of this. Design wise, this is basically the comic version of a Snyder Nightmare Batman, so I’m all in.

Zur-En-Arrh Batman Not needed. Plastic is hard, mostly raw, feels almost bootleg. Ankle ball joints were loose, no tension or clickies so he flopped around. If you dig the story it’s visually well done. The head and cape have great sculpting and colors pop. Just for me, not needed at this point in the line.

Infinite Frontier Robin – Similar construction to the previous Robin. I think this one is cleaner, head sculpt is better. I haven’t dug into him in the books yet, but I like the new look for now. Overall well done.

Solar Suit Superman – Another solid piece. This is not 90s Death of Superman, it’s from the just-pre-Rebirth era mini series Lois and Clark and is comic accurate. It does what it needs to do. I think this is the best executed Superman so far in Multiverse, but I am still looking for “THE ONE” Superman just like I am Batman.

Rebirth Zod – Comic accurate. I think it’s cool from the neck down. Head is OK, but a little Blah. Not quite sure what I’d want in it’s place, but it just feels a bit boring, especially without a solid Superman to battle. I’ll tuck him behind Lex for now in my Supes nook.

Death of the Family Joker – Alright with the Jokers already. I dug the bonkers face/off situaiton from New 52 at the time. Had the DC Collectibles one in the worksuit. The bright colors mixed with the skin mask doesn’t work for me. This needs to be a gritty, grungy, dark, yukky situation. Under the rainbow paint tho, that head sculpt is there.

McFarlane Design Wonder Woman (Gold Label) – I’m all for McFarlane (the man) giving us some designs, but I didn’t super feel Batman or Wonder Woman. This one however is better than the first release. More, better paint. So if you dig the look, it’s worth a pick up. I’d really like a modern, core Wonder Woman tho. New 52 (no pants) or Rebirth, non story specific. We still don’t have a modern Trinity with all the proper articulation, paint, and scale that mesh together.

So all in all, a lot more Batman. 2.75 of them are great. Some good fillers. I’ve said it several times in reviews already so will keep it short. Modern, comic, non-story-specific looks for the DC roster, heroes and their counterpart villains. Not saying DCM should ONLY be that, but it would be nice to know it’s being done consistently with a long term plan. Have one in each wave/round of releases. Here today tho – it’s all about your personal preference, random “ooh I like that gimmie” is the M.O.
