Earlier this year, Mattel announced the Turtles of Grayskull – a Masters of the Universe and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles crossover line. It will use MOTU Origins style sculpting, giving us articulated vintage inspired bodies with the two universes mashed up. The Mattel team was kind enough to answer a couple questions about the line for us here at Toyark, so we are sharing their responses below. While they can’t get too specific, we get a little insight and hope for the line beyond what we’ve already seen! Is this a limited series with a hard limit on waves/characters already or can it continue on so long as sales are good?
We are aiming to deliver a Full Year statement of 4 core waves in 2024, totaling 16 characters. Additionally, we also plan to deliver 8 deluxe characters as well as a potential bonus Build-a-Figure character. While we cannot confirm anything at this stage, there is always potential for this collaboration to continue if fans of both brands respond well to the line and want to collect deeper!
Are crossover vehicles / animal partners an option?
Turtles of Grayskull is truly a dream collaboration for us, with strong synergies and endless possibilities between these two brands. The current lineup exclusively focuses on figures, with a dynamic slate of TMNT characters entering Eternia and MOTU characters infused with new technology and/or mutagen ooze, yielding unexpected results!
Could we see additional versions of the core heroes and villains? Like Battle Armor, Samurai, Space, etc. Not specifically those, but popular variants from each brand being remixed.
For the Turtles of Grayskull, we’re exploring how characters suffer from Mutagenic mutations while others find Eternian and Turtle inspirations to enhance their looks. Not promising anything for now, but you’ll have to tune into the story as it unfolds in our mini-comics to see whether He-Man and other characters are able to reverse their mutations, and what enhancements, including battle armor, etc. our heroes will don to thwart the threat of Shredder and Krang.
