Godzilla Classic Minimates Series 1 Toyark Photo Shoot

Diamond Select Toys has released their Godzilla Classic Minimates Series 1 Box Set. The first set contains some iconic kaiju to go along with the King of Monsters. This is only the first wave in the series. The Godzilla Minimates Series 2 hit in March 2015. Series 1 includes:

Godzilla
Titanosaurus
Gigan
Mothra

The set sells for $19.99 and is available now at comic and specialty shops. After all the teaser images, show appearances and reveals, it was nice to finally get my hands on this fantastic set. With the 60th anniversary of Godzilla upon us, we’ve been getting a ton of figures from assorted companies. I never expected to see Godzilla Minimates, but once I did, I was hooked (longtime readers may know that Minimates and Godzilla toys have become two of my favorite collectibles). This set takes some of the most iconic Shōwa Era (1954 – 1975) monsters and designs. The Minimates design style works quite well to depict the man in suit aesthetic so important to classic kaiju designs.

The figures feature a standard Minimate torso. Godzilla, Titanosaurus and Gigan also feature standard legs and arms. Over top of those base torsos are character specific torso overlays. Mothra does not feature an overlay as he includes wings that attach to the arm spaces and an abdomen piece that attaches where the legs would normally connect. At times, the torso overlays can restrict the articulation, mainly in the legs and waist area. You can still get some nicely dynamic poses. Mothra, though, doesn’t lend itself to much articulation, though the wings, head and abdomen area can all rotate.

Godzilla, over the years, has featured many different looks. With this set Godzilla sports a softer, less angry, look which harkens back to the first handful of films from the 50’s and early 60’s. If I had to pinpoint a specific film, I’d say his design was most inspired by Son of Godzilla. Mothra, Gigan and Titanosaurus all feature the designs from their respective run-ins with big G.

The paint on the figures is very clean and the colors on Gigan and Titanosaurus are wonderfully bright. The work on Mothra’s wings is also quite nice. Joints are tight and pop off easily enough for swapping pieces. I did like that I could pop standard Minimate heads into Godzilla and Titanosaurus to mimic a behind the scenes movie look. The design of Gigan’s head sculpt required a larger neck connection, so he’s unable to swap heads with the other Minimates.

For me, these are fantastic figure. I cannot wait to get my hands on Series 2 next year, as that will give us even more great foes like Mechagodzilla and Hedora. Below, find some highlight photos with 66 total images below that.
