NECA kicked off their newest wave of Aliens figures with the massive new Alien Queen. This is likely to be the largest figure they do for their 7″ scale Aliens line. It features a huge amount of articulation and stands over 15″ tall.From head-to-tail, it’s over 30″ long. Overall
The Alien Queen always seemed like the most unlikely figure to get made. It would need to be a large, expensive figure, and I was never sure if the market could support it. NECA has definitely shown that there is demand for this by releasing a top notch figure. The Alien Queen is the first NECA Aliens figure I have owned. I grabbed a Bishop as well, as he goes perfectly with the figure. The Queen comes packaged in a very large window box. Once opened, the figure sits in a tray, held in place by a few twist ties. The style of tray and the window box is great for those who want to open it, play with it, then have it displayed in the box.
Once removed from the tray, I was immediately impressed by the details and paint. There’s a ton of articulation here, two interchangeable inner snapping jaws (one opened and one closed), and even a backdrop included. The figure has a great weight to it, and it feels like something a collector would own, as opposed to a simple toy. The joints, right out of the box, were super tight. I’ve learned, from past experience with other figures, to heat up those joints a bit as the paint can stick together. Once loosened a bit, I had no problems. The figure could hold all the poses I wanted, which was great. For a few shots, I had no choice but to use the included figure stand. The Alien Queen is a top heavy figure with skinny legs, so it’s best to incorporate the stand for more dynamic poses.
The figure is best appreciated when holding it in your hands. It is definitely a surprise by the level of sculpted detail here. The headpiece shifts front to back, allowing you to hid the Queen’s jaws. The tail rotates at the hips, arms, legs, hands, and feet all have numerous ball joints and/or hinges. The neck can rotate in multiple spots and you can twist the waist. The jaw hinge opens quite wide, and there’s a peg space in the back of the throat to attach the snapping jaws. It’s a little tough to get them attached, but they are very sturdy once attached.
For me, this was a great spot to jump into the Aliens line at. This feels like a special piece to me. Bishop, and the upcoming Ripley’s and Power Loader are going to make great companion pieces, and I cannot wait to grab them. Remember to use that figure stand. In the end, there’s a lot to love about the figure and it is a perfect centerpiece to your Aliens collection.
