NECA toys shocked horror fans when they first teased a retro 2-pack of Pamela and Jason Voorhees from the first Friday the 13th film. The pair initially seemed like an odd choice. But as more images and info came out, it became clear that we were in for a pretty special release. The original film, for the most part, is a straight forward slasher film with a fantastic twist ending. Underneath that, though, is a fairly heartbreaking back story. A mother, so grief stricken and angry at the negligent death of her helpless son, lets insanity set in and becomes a ruthless killer. You can see the anguish in her face as she talks about the death of Jason throughout the film. Then you see her fractured psyche as she makes her murderous intentions known.

Overall
This set is one of the best use of the Mego style retro figures NECA has done so far. The characters seemed tailor made for the cloth figure treatment. As I said before, the back story for the characters is quite heartbreaking. The set itself mirrors that wrenching feeling in more ways than one. Not only is it a set of a Mother who can no longer protect the child she lost, but it comes right at a time of heartbreak for horror fans. Just before this was released, the world lost Betsy Palmer, who portrayed Pamela Voorhees in the film. By all accounts, she was a wonderful woman who loved meeting her fans. The set is a great tribute.
The figures come packaged in a clamshell like all of NECA’s retro figures. It features another great painting by Jason Edmiston. Included are Pamela and Jason. Pamela includes an additional swap out hand, one for holding the included knife and one for holding the included axe. Jason’s head, feet and hands feature a more muted, slightly brownish tint to them, while the body features a stronger red color. The paints don’t quite match up between those areas. It’s not jarring, but it’s noticeable. Jason includes a piece of muddy debris from the lake that you can wrap around his neck or place on his head. He is wearing a Camp Crystal Lake tee. Each figure features excellent articulation. This is especially true of the 5.5″ tall Jason figure. The sculpting and fabrication are top notch throughout. The likeness is pretty spot on for Pamela and Jason is quite gruesome.
NECA simply knocked it out of the park with this set. The figures were nice surprises and the execution is very impressive. Track it down if you can, as these were probably the hottest sellers of NECA’s SDCC exclusives.
