NECA Batman v Superman 1/4 Scale Batman – Toyark Photo Shoot

By Joe Moore on June 12, 2016 at 12:54 pm under DC Toy News, Random Photo Shoot

The first and only figure NECA is releasing from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is their 1/4 Scale Batman Figure. In the film, Bruce Wayne brings his Batman back to the streets of Gotham to take on Superman after he witnesses the destruction caused by two “gods” fighting in Metropolis. Determined to never let that destruction happen again, Batman re-establishes himself as a force for justice in Gotman City, while training and creating a new suit that may help him withstand the might of Krypton’s Last Son. The Batman figure stands just under 19″ tall and has over 30 points of articulation. It includes alternate hands, a grapnel gun with accessories, two batarangs and a cloth cape. We picked this figure up from Toyark sponsor Entertainment Earth. It’s In Stock now for $89.99 with Free shipping! You can check out our full review and over 65 high resolution images by reading on.

Overall
I personally wasn’t a big fan of Batman v Superman. However, Ben Affleck’s Batman, a point of contention before the movie came out, wound up being one of the best parts of the film. His take on Batman was dark, twisted and full of anger and pain. The costume, the Batcave and all of his gadgets felt more “Batman” than many fans had expected. The costumes, both standard and armored, really stuck with fans. It was modeled after the iconic appearance in Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight story arc. With a bulkier, more muscular body, a giant Bat symbol and the short eared cowl, The Dark Knight finally looked like a version of Batman based specially on the comics. NECA has translated that look rather well. While not perfect, or their best 1/4 scale Batman, it’s still an impressive peice in-hand. It has some of the best articulation of this scale, beaten only by their 1/4 Scale Arkham Knight Batman.

The figure comes packaged in a collector friendly window box. It sits on a carboard backer held on by a few twist ties. The accessories are held in place by a plastic tray, which is glued onto the cardboard. You either need to cut that or rip it off the backer. Batman includes two clenched fists, a right hand that can hold the grapnel gun and a left hand that can hold the two batarangs.

Once opened, the figure is actually pretty impressive in hand. He definitely has the very bulky look of the movie version. The bulkiness actually makes him look shorter than he is, but the figure is actually a little taller than most of the other 1/4 scale Batman figures. The outfit and cowl are both highly textured. The shirt and pants have that distinct Basketball texture from the movie outfit, while the cowl and gloves feel very leather-like. The suit chest is a softer, possibly vinyl, shirt piece. This helps to keep a very uniform look, while still allowing for movement underneath. Like I mentioned in the opening, this figure has over 30 points of articulation. The soft vinyl suit overlay is great, and allows for the figure to pose with almost no hindrance. Both elbows and knees are double jointed with numerous swivels and ratchet joints throughout. There’s some ab crunch or a ball joint hidden in the waist as well. The most impressive bit, though, was the amount of movement in the head sculpt. With the cowl being a solid piece, I feared he would be hindered with movement, much like the Michael Keaton 1/4 scale Batman. The opposite is true, as the head could easily be positioned looking up or down, could tilt and look side-to-side. The hands swap out very easily and the joints throughout are very tight. The hips have the distinct, strong ratchet joints seen in previous figures, and help to keep the figure sturdy in any pose. Check out image #60, where I have him doing a high kick. I didn’t use any stand to hold him up. The figure is balanced on its own, showing how sturdy the hip and ankle joints are. Another strong point is the cape. The material used her looks fantastic in hand. It has a good weight to it, and is one of the longest capes they’ve done. It drapes really well and fits Batman the look of “Batman” perfectly.

If there’s a weak point on this release, it’s probably the head sculpt. When looking straight on, something looks off. I think it’s the exposed lower face and the eyes. The eyes themselves, in many photos, looks cross-eyed. That’s not the case, as they are very deep set, so the inner white portions get lost in the shadows. The lower jaw seems to be a little long and juts out a bit, which makes the head feel more elongated. In profile, the head actually looks great, as the sculpt on the cowl is detailed and movie accurate, has a strong jaw line and fits in with the rest of the sculpt nicely. It definitely looks better in-hand compared to what the photos show.

NECA has released so many excellent Batman 1/4 scale figures already, that fans have asked how this compares. I’ll say that Keaton and Arkham Knight are still my favorite two, and almost impossible to top. I’d say the Origins Batman is third and this one probably sits above the Adam West one, as I fell the look and sculpt, overall Batman look are a little better. If you’re a fan of the 1/4 scale line and Ben Affleck’s take on Batman, then I can recommend this for sure. The sculpted details and excellent articulation make it really fun to mess with. Check out a few highlight photos below and over 65 images in the full gallery after that.
