NECA Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 – Retro Leatherface – Toyark Photo Shoot

By Joe Moore on July 14, 2016 at 9:45 am under Horror Toy News, Random Photo Shoot

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 was released in 1986. It was a highly anticipated sequel to one of the most iconic horror films ever made. However, what audiences weren’t expecting was the dark and twisted horror comedy that director Tobe Hooper delivered. It features the Texas based cannibal clan in a gory, over the top and strange film, which featured Dennis Hooper as a chainsaw wielding lawman intent on taking them out once and for all. It wasn’t particularly well received at the time, but has gained some traction with fans who are re-discovering it now, especially with a new blu-ray release by Scream Factory. NECA is releasing a few retro Mego style figures during the 30th anniversary of the film. First up is horror icon Leatherface, with a new look, and massive new chainsaw. Choptop will be the second figure from the film, and that releases in September.

We grabbed the Leatherface figure from Toyark sponsor Big Bad toy Store. We have a full review and over 40 high resolution photos. You can see them by reading on.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 – Mego Style Leatherface by NECA

Pros

  • Incredibly creepy mask sculpt
  • Good paint work on head
  • Chainsaw looks amazing
  • Articulation isn’t hindered by cloth suit

Cons

  • Soft chainsaw blade

Overall
Leatherface comes packaged on the plastic clamshell packaging that most of NECA’s Mego style figures are released in. The cardback features artwork by artist Jason Edmiston. The clamshell is resealable if you carefully open the packaging. I use a box cutter and simply slice the sealed rivets, which keeps the plastic itself in near perfect shape for putting the figure back in the packaging. Leatherface includes an alternate right hand, a chainsaw and an electric knife.

If you’ve purchased any of NECA’s prior Mego style figures, then you know what to expect here. Good articulation and a somewhat bulky a cloth outfit. Though, the outfit here uses a thinner material and isn’t as bulky as outfits on figures like Freddy. With the tucked in shirt and the shirt/jacket combo, I was worried the waist movement would be completely hindered. However, I was pleasantly surprised to see there was enough give there to allow for decent movement in the waist. The arms could have been a trouble spot as well, but the thinner material allows for the arms to have the full range of movement that the Mego bodies offer. The head sculpt, which looks weird initially, is actually pretty spot on to the film. The wild flowing hair, the multi-colored skin mask, the bright white wide eyes all add up to a supremely creepy looking figure. The paint work is fantastic on the head sculpt as well.

The Chainsaw included with Leatherface looks nice as well. The detail work on it is great, and the oversized nature of the blade works great as it was almost treated like a sword in the film. To hold it, you simply unhinge a spot on the back handle and slide it into the right hand, then disconnect the silver handle and slide it through the left hand. The blade itself, though, is a softer plastic. I couldn’t get it to stay straight, and mine remained slightly warped. The electric knife is a welcome accessory as well. Like the chainsaw, the handle opens at the back to allow the handle to slide into the hand.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 Leatherface is another fun addition to the horror Mego style line up. It likely won’t appeal to as many people as the original 2 releases, but it’s a really fun, well made figure and worth grabbing if your a fan of the character. It will make a great companion piece to the upcoming Choptop. Now, we just need a Dennis Hopper to have an epic chainsaw sword fight.
