Aliens: Genocide was a four issues limited series from Dark Horse Comics. In the comics, there is a civil war among two Xenomorph factions on the Alien home world; Xenomorph Prime. The red Aliens, a rebellious group that leaves the main hive, look to take control of the home world from the genetically pure black Aliens. The group was led by a new Red Queen Mother and consisted of Aliens Drones (aka the Alien Warriors). The war itself was a backdrop to the main story of the series, but created a memorable expansion to the mythos of the Xenomorph. In the comics, the red Xenomorphs were eventually defeated and wiped out.
As part of their Concept Series, NECA has crafted a new 2-pack based on the red Aliens. The new Toys “R” US Exclusive – Aliens: Genocide 2-Pack features red variants of the Big Chap Alien as well as the Dog Alien. This set is available in stores and online at Toysrus.com right now. Overall
Like many of the Toys R Us exclusive Aliens and Predator 2-Packs, the Aliens: Genocide Set comes in an all plastic packaging. It uses a similar design style to the previous Aliens Genocide 2-pack, which featured the Red and Black Aliens Warriors. The “Concept Series” sticker is present here. the back of the packaging features all of the Genocide Red Aliens, as well as a short back story for the Aliens Civil War. The figures are held onto the plastic trays using multiple twist ties. No additional accessories are included. The packaging is fully sealed plastic, so you do have to cut it open to removed the figures.
The Big Chap Alien and Dog Alien are two molds we’ve seen many times before. There are no real changes to the sculpts themselves. Though, it does appear that the Big Chap Aliens is using the slightly updated Big Chap mold, which fixed a few small quality control issues with the initial release from 2013. Those included tighter joints. Outside of that, there’s not much different, sculpt wise, from the various other uses of these molds. I won’t go too in detail, as we’ve reviewed these molds multiple times. But, the sculpts are both excellent with great details. The Big Chap Alien has a little over 25 points of articulation, including a bendable tail. The Dog Aliens has well over 30 points of articulation as well as a bendable tail. There were no quality control issues on the figures, which featured nice, tight joints.
The real selling point of this set is the bright red paint scheme. With red as the base color, NECA used an assortment of paint washes to showcase the figure details. Most of each figure has a black wash to add depth to the figures’ sculpts. However, a few spots have lighter, highlight washes over them, giving greater contrast. This is especially evident on the ribs and abdomen of the Dog Alien and the arms/legs of the Big Chap. Both figures have a clear coating over the paint, giving them a wet, slimy look. The Big Chap has a translucent dome painted with a bit of silver/gray throughout the length of the dome. The Dog Alien has a translucent dome with a darker black gradation in the front, leading to mostly clear near the back.The teeth on the figures are painted in metallic silver, while the inner snapping jaws use a light gray base.
The red paint scheme works incredibly well with these molds, as it did with the retooled Queen and the Genocide Alien Warrior. As a big fan of the odd colored Aliens, and the Concept Series in general, these are a welcome addition to my line up.
