Earlier this year, NECA released their first ever Alien Concept Series figure in Aliens Series 7. The figure, based on the original concept for the Big Chap Alien, was a translucent, slightly yellow re-release of NECA’s Big Chap Alien. Due to the overwhelming popularity, NECA has released a 1/4 scale version of the Alien Concept Translucent Big Chap Alien. The figure stands over 22″ tall with 25 points of articulation. It is being limited to a single production run. When it’s sold out, that’s it.

Overall
The Concept Big Chap Alien comes in a massive window box. The design is nearly identical to the original 1/4 Scale Big Chap release. The main difference is the photos have been swapped out to showcase images of the Concept Alien. the cardboard backdrop included is the same as the previous release. The Xenomorph is held onto the backer with 10 or so twist ties. A small amount of assembly is required, as the back pieces need to be snapped onto the figure.
The figure, outside of color and materials used, is essentially the same as the standard big Chap Alien. I have an in depth review of that figure Here. For this, I’ll mainly focus on what’s new or changed. The overall feel of the Concept Big Chap is similar to the original. There’s still a mix of hard plastic with some softer vinyl overlays on the torso. The entire piece is slightly translucent with a strong yellow-ish bone color tint to the figure. The transparency isn’t as noticeable as it is in the smaller 7″ scale version, but still very apparent. Paint washes are much used to great effect on the larger figure, with oranges and browns used to bring out the fine textures and smaller sculpted details. On areas, such as the outer jaws, where clearer plastic is used, there are thicker areas of paint and washes, with some of it rubbed away. This helps give is a flecked or speckled look in certain spot, giving it some subtle texture variety. The dome on the head is nearly pure clear, giving you a great look at the skull structure underneath.
Joints are tight throughout. Like the first Big Chap release, the hip joints are extremely tight, and will take some extra force to move them as they really lock into place. The tail feels like it is made of a slightly softer material compared to the original. When bending it, the tail didn’t seem to hold as well in place as I would have liked. This made it a little harder to pose the figure, as I tend to use the tail for added balance, especially in more dynamic stances. Everything else, quality control wise, was handled well. The articulated jaw, ball jointed torso, shoulders, double-jointed knees and more all moved with out issue, with the joints being strong.
The Concept Big Chap was an excellent 7″ scale release and its 1/4 scale counterpart is also a welcome addition to the line up. It adds some great color variety to the Alien ranks and is a great way to preserve some behind-the-scenes movie history. If you have the space for a 22″ tall figure, then the Concept Alien is a wonderful looking and fun to pose pick up. Check out a selection of photos below, with the full gallery after that.
