Eaglemoss Alien Space Jockey Statue – Toyark Photo Shoot

By Joe Moore on November 9, 2017 at 11:21 am under Aliens and Predator Toy News, Random Photo Shoot

When Alien was originally released, one of the greatest mysteries of the film was the unknown alien creature found dead aboard the derelict space ship on LV-426. The creature was massive in size, sitting in some type of navigation chair, his body fossilized and a gaping hole in his chest. The creature has gone by numerous names, but the most popular are the Space Jockey and The Pilot. Assorted comics have explored the origin of the Space Jockey and its species, but have been rendered non-canon with the release of Prometheus in 2012. We now know them as Engineers. Even though the history of the Engineers isn’t as mysterious as it once was, the Space Jockey scene in Alien remains one of the most impressive and long lasting visuals from the entire Aliens saga.

Eaglemoss has a new statue available, based on the iconic Space Jockey from the film. The special edition statue is part of their larger statue collection. It is available to purchase now directly from the Eaglemoss Shop. It is currently priced at $142.45 (down from $149.99). They have sent along the statue for us to check out. Read on for my review and full gallery.

Alien – Space Jockey Limited Edition Scale Statue by Eaglemoss

Pros

  • Solid and detailed sculpt
  • Some nice paint apps
  • Good weight with sturdy construction
  • Manageable size for easy display
  • No assembly needed

Cons

  • Could use an additional dark paint wash

Overall
The Alien Space Jockey comes boxed in a large windowless packaged. The packaging features photos of the statue, along with design elements from Alien and previous Eaglemoss Alien Statues. The design used here helps the packaging fit in with previous Alien releases by Eaglemoss. It’s a large box, but not so big that you have to scrounge for space. Inside, the statue is protected by a thick foam tray. It sits snugly in the foam, preventing any unneeded jostling in the box. The statue includes a catalog and a certificate of authenticity.

The Space Jockey itself is ready for display immediately after opening. There’s no assembly required. The statue is cast in a metallic resin. Each statue is hand painted after production. Using resin for the statue adds some nice weight to it, while also keeping the entire thing sturdy. No parts of it feels fragile or looked like it would have breakage issues. The statue weighs in at roughly 5.5 lbs and stands just about 9″ tall. The sculpt here is nicely detailed, with a more smooth finish metallic areas compared to the slightly textures Space Jockey itself. The statue, I was told, is hand painted. It looks like they used a combination of airbrush and and traditional paint brushing. In some areas you can see the nice brush strokes, especially in areas using a lighter color to add highlights. While the paint apps are handled well, I would like to have seen a more traditional dark paint wash over the whole thing. That would have broken up the airbrushed look for much of it, while also really bringing out the sculpted details. Right now it looks a bit too clean and not as aged looking as it could be.

For those wondering, no this will not scale well with NECA figures. The size will allow it to work a bit better with ReAction or I could see it working almost perfectly with Alien Minimates. It’s much larger than the NECA Cinemachine Space Jockey, but would be half the size of the NECA foam version.

I’ve had mixed reactions to some of the Eaglemoss items I’ve handled. I wasn’t a huge fan of the small scale statues, I was far more impressed with their large scale Big Chap Alien Statue. Much like that, I think the larger scale works great for the Space Jockey Statue. At smaller scales, this type of resin seems to soften up the details, but works fine for bigger pieces. If you’re looking for something almost exactly in-between the two NECA versions, this this fits the bill nicely. Check out some highlight photos below and the full gallery after that.
