After the surprising box office success of A Nightmare On Elm Street, the producers at New Line Cinema were quick to put a sequel into motion. Wes Craven refused to return to direct, and directing duties went to relative newcomer Jack Sholder. Along with writer David Chaskin, the duo brought to life an amazingly odd sequel filled with sexual overtones that producers were initially blind to. And while it’s easy to poke fun at the thematic elements of the film, it’s hard to ignore how absolutely horrifying Freddy Krueger is in the film. In A Nightmare On Elm St. 2: Freddy’s Revenge, he is still portrayed as an absolute monster, as the darkly humorous Freddy wasn’t truly brought in until the 3rd film. In the movie, Freddy looks to escape the confines of his Dreamworld prison by possessing young Jesse Walsh, one of the new inhabitants of the famed Elm Street house. Using his new access to the real world, Freddy forces Jesse to continue his reign of terror.
While the film itself broke most of the rules established in the original film, and it’s sequels, Freddy himself remained scary as hell. The portrayal of Freddy in the film is still my personal favorite of the entire series. His makeup is more refined than the original, adding a more demonic look to the character. I also really liked the look of the hand with blades protruding, which always struck me as particularly spine chilling.
NECA continues their line of Ultimate Freddy Krueger figures with an Ultimate Freddy’s Revenge – Freddy Krueger Figure. Previously, they have released Ultimate version of A Nightmare On Elm St. Freddy, and a Dream Warriors Freddy. Coming in a collector friendly flapped window box, the Ultimate NOES2 Freddy Krueger features the classic painted poster artwork for the front of the box. The artwork was created by the excellent poster artist Matthew Peak. By using poster art again here, it creates a nice series of box designs through all three Ultimate Freddy releases. The sides and back of the box showcase a few photos of the included figure. The front opens to reveal the figure inside and a larger photo of Freddy. The figure itself, along with the numerous accessories, are on a plastic tray, held down by a few twist ties. Freddy includes three interchangeable head sculpts, a removable hat, swap out gloved and bladed finger hands, a flame effect, and two monster dogs with human faces.
Like most of the Freddy figures released by NECA, the Freddy’s Revenge version shares multiple parts with previous releases. Now, this makes sense, as starting with part 2, much of his look remained consistent throughout the few films. The new items, such as the head sculpts, fit in nicely here and help to really differentiate the look between figures. If you’ve bought either of the previous two Ultimate releases, then sculpt and articulation are pretty much the same. There are three head sculpts here, each with a unique look that works perfectly with the figure. The paint work on the head sculpts is excellent, with nice washes to bring out the burn marks, exposed brains, rotted teeth and more. Paint work is strong throughout as well, with a slightly cleaner look to the sweater compared the the 1st Ultimate Freddy. The figure had no notable paint issues, no loose joints or any other quality control problems. Joints were solid and parts swapped out easily.
What makes this release unique are the new accessories based on specific scenes from the film. The flame effect piece calls back to the “You are all my children now” scene, as a fire burns behind Freddy who has finally revealed himself to those in the real world. The piece is cast in a painted, semi-translucent plastic. At the base is a magnet that is used to place the flame onto Freddy’s back. It’s sculpted in a way so that it contours to Freddy’s sweater perfectly. It’s light weight enough that it doesn’t throw off the figure balance. The other new pieces are the creepy dogs with human faces. Only seen for a few seconds in the film, the sight of these monster dogs is something that long stuck with fans who saw this film in their youth. These are mostly static pieces, with a ball jointed neck connection to pose the heads how you would like. Unsurprisingly, they are every bit as horrifying as they should be. They look creepy and sickly, with sculpted sores and boils on the heads.
The Freddy’s Revenge figure should delight Elm Street fans. It’s a fairly packed release from NECA, with three heads, two scaled monster dogs and more, it’s hard to believe this release can be had for just $25. It is likely a toss up between the Dream Warriors and Freddy’s Revenge figures as to the best Ultimate Freddy right now. This is a hard figure to pass up.
