The newest additional to the Guillermo del Toro Signature Collection from NECA Toys is The Faun from Pan’s Labyrinth. The mythical figure, also known as Pan, tests Ofelia as she looks to escape the confines of the difficult life she is forced to live. She is never truly sure if she can trust the Faun, and ultimately disobeys his commands. The creature is portrayed by frequent del Toro collaborator Doug Jones, who also portrays the Pale Man in the film. The Faun features a design that pulls elements of the forest into the anatomy of the creature, and has ram-like horns.
The figure, which is officially scheduled to ship out next week to retailers, has actually started to hit some stores this week. Fans have been showing off their purchases on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Our friends at NECA have sent over the figure to check out. Overall
The Faun comes packaged in a collector friendly flapped window box. The front features outstanding artwork from the film. The back of the box showcases the figure, a synopsis of the film, and additional releases in the collection. The Faun includes a satchel, a bone flute, a dagger, and a container.
As with the Pale Man (see Gallery and Review Here), The Faun is a fantastic representation of the creature from the film. The figure is probably going to rank as one of the best sculpted figures of the year from NECA. The intricate detail work, that transitions from lifelike skin, to wood covered appendages, is excellent. The asymmetrical legs are especially impressive, as one is much more animal-like, while the other looks like the pulled root of a tree. The Faun also features some carved designs into his skin, which are handled perfectly here. The paint work on the figure is also among the best we’ve seen from NECA recently, with a staggering amount of washes and and more finely detailed sections. The figure has a very earthy color to him, which helps him to blend into his forest surrounding, and that translates really well here. Areas like the eyes, and separations from skin to hair or wood are crisp and clean. Much of the figure has a clear coat wash over it, mainly on the branches, horns and non-skin areas.
Articulation is solid here as well. The torso is ball jointed at the chest, and again at the waist, giving great range of motion in his mid-section. The legs feature multiple knee hinges, which mimic the anatomy of a goat or ram. Those joints are particularly strong, helping to keep the figure standing , and making it easier to balance him. Elbows are single joints, but still have a strong range of motion. There were no paint locking issues on this figure, and none of the joints were stuck out of the package. I expected a few to be overly tight, due to the amount of paint and the clear coating, but ran into no such issues.
The figure includes a satchel, which he can wear over his shoulder. The flap opens, allowing you to place the bone flute inside. A small dagger is included, as is a container he can wear around his neck, which also opens. The accessories work great, and the Faun can easily wear both items without weighing him down.
As great as the Pale Man figure is, I have to admit that The Faun is the best in the del Toro collection so far. The amount of sculpted detail and excellent paint work are really some of NECA’s best, matching and surpassing many of their Alien Xenos in detail work. The figure is fun to pose, and is going to look great on display with the Pale Man and Ofelia. Check out some select photos below, and the full gallery after that.
