Friday The 13th Part 3 – One:12 Collective Jason Voorhees – Toyark Photo Shoot

By Joe Moore on April 18, 2019 at 2:30 pm under Horror Toy News, Random Photo Shoot

The third installment of the Friday The 13th franchise is probably one of it’s most important entries. The 1982 film became the precursor to a longer running narrative that spans parts four through 6, and also introduces the iconic look that Jason Voorhees is known for. For the first time, Jason dons the instantly recognizable hockey mask. And though the physical mask has changed in nearly every film since, the general style of the face hugging mask will forever be associated with the horror icon. Another important aspect of the film is that it was filmed in 3D, with many of special effects and screen gags tailored to take advantage of the technology.

The Friday The 13th Part 3 – Jason Voorhees One:12 Collective Figure is available now, though it may be a bit hard to find thanks to its popularity. The figure was supplied by sponsor Entertainment Earth. After the jump, you can see my photos and thoughts on the release.

Pros

  • Excellent head sculpts
  • Nice articulation
  • Lots of weapons
  • Easy to swap out parts
  • Solid paint work
  • Good masks
  • Great interchangeable hands

Cons

  • Clothing is far too clean
  • Clothing isn’t accurate to the film

Overall
The Jason Voorhees figure comes packaged in the standard Mezco One:12 style box. Jason is packed in a collector friendly window box with a slip cover. The slip cover features a bit of subtle art on the front, with Friday the 13th Part 3 style art on the sides. The back of the slipcover showcases the figure and every accessory that’s included. This is a packed release. Jason includes a standard head, a battle damaged head, two masks, eight interchangeable hands, an axe, a machete, a cleaver, a knife, a pipe wrench, a harpoon gun, a fire poker, a pitchfork, and a figure stand.

I wasn’t really sure I was going to like this figure too much. The initial promo images didn’t do much for me. My experience with One:12 in general has been mixed. I loved the Dawn of the Dead set, liked the Michael Myers, and wasn’t a huge fan of the Ash Williams from Evil Dead 2. I think their horror releases work better when they aren’t going for specific actor likenesses. While I still have some issues (mainly with the cloth outfit), the figure turned out to be a pleasant surprise. As with all Mezco One:12 figures, there’s a high end look and feel to it, and the articulation and range of motion are both excellent.

Let’s start with the good. The overall look is unmistakably “Jason”. Mezco sculpted in the hunch on his back to give his shoulders a more raised look, and it helps with the proportions a lot. The two masks included are, for the most part, really good. They look far better in-hand than they did in those promo shots, though they’re a little more white than the light tan of the film versions. The battle damaged mask does line up perfectly with he axe cut on the damaged head sculpt. They fit on the heads perfectly. Speaking of the portraits, the unmasked head sculpts are flat out great. The skin has a nice translucent look to it, and the sculpts are pretty much spot on to the films. The paint on those is what really boosts them up, as they’re very life-like. Brush lines for the eyes and teeth are incredibly crisp, and there’s a speckling pattern to mimic natural skin texture. The blood on the battle damaged head is appropriately gruesome. The included hands are also great. Each one is tailored for specific scenes and weapons, and they are varied enough to not feel superfluous. They missed out by not having a bloody left hand though.

Mezco packed this guy with just about every major weapon seen in the film. Each one is excellently detailed, and made from a strong plastic that will bend a bit if needed, but never feels like it will snap. The blades on the axe and machete are surprisingly sharp (nearly nicked my finger on the axe). The weapons all sit snugly in Jason’s hands, and there’s a specialized trigger finger hand for the harpoon gun.

The issue I do have with this guy is the fabric outfit. For the size, the outfit is actually tailored quite well. The material isn’t as bulky as it appeared to be in early promo shots. But the overall look is far too clean. It looks fresh out of the washer. Some blood splattering, a little dark paint to make it look dirty would have helped a lot. Also, the outfit doesn’t quite match up to the film. The pants are more in line with his look in Part 4,as opposed to the gray blue pants in Part 3. The button up shirt reveals too much of the white t-shirt underneath as well. It doesn’t kill the overall look. It works as a Part 3 and 4 hybrid, and in general still works fine for the character. Between this and the NECA Ultimate Figure, the NECA one is definitely more accurate to his film appearance, has just about the same accessories, and is going to be a lot easier on your wallet to pick up at this point.

Even with the issues I had, I have to admit, it was a lot of fun messing with the figure. The excellent head sculpt, solid masks and great assortment of accessories are all major pluses here. If you’re on the hunt for the figure, you have to act quick. Chances are many spots will be sold out at this point and the aftermarket prices are likely not going to be coming down.
