As part of their San Diego Comic-Con 2019 Exclusives, the Etched Pennywise is the latest addition to the IT (2017) line up from NECA Toys. The figure is based on a scene in the film where an etching of Pennywise is shown from the signing of Derry’s town charter. The figure is black and white, with some gray shading, and dark ink lines throughout to emulate the etching itself. The figure includes two swap out heads, a red balloon, a gray balloon, and an extra left hand. The figure is priced at $30, and will be available at NECA’s booth during SDCC 2019.
Our friends at NECA were kind enough to supply us with an advanced sample of the figure. After the jump, you can see photos and some thoughts on the release.
San Diego Comic-Con 2019 Exclusive – IT (2017) Etched Pennywise 7″ Scale Figure by NECA
I’m going to forgo the typical Pros and cons list that I tend to do with a review. This will be my fourth review of the mold, and not much has changed since its original release. It’s the same excellent Pennywise sculpt with an exclusive paint deco. Be sure to check out my preview Pennywise Photo Shoots for a more in-depth write up of the mold.
The paint deco is the big draw for this version of Pennywise. Drawn, inked, and painted stylepaint decos tend to be quite popular with action figure collectors, especially if a link can be made to an existing piece of art. When done well, it can bring new life to a previously released mold. I’d say that’s the case here, as Pennywise looks just as creepy in black and white as he does in the general release figures. The painted ink lines look great on the figure, and the gray tones come courtesy of some heavy paint washes. On the stark white figure, these washes makes the small sculpted details really stand out.
The accessories included are similar to ones we’ve seen before. The two different balloons included both work well. If you want to keep the pure monotone look of the figure, you can go with the gray balloon, which has a bit of ink line paint on it. However, I think the figure actually works best with the red balloon, as that added pop of blood red adds an extra bit of creepiness to the figure.
I actually wound up enjoying this figure a lot. I love unique paint sculpts like this, and actually hope this is a trend that continues with NECA’s releases. It’s different enough to make it worth purchasing, but it’s not something that feels like an essential part of the IT line up, which makes it a smart pick for a con exclusive.
