The Conjuring 2 - Crooked Man by NECA - Toyark Photo Shoot - The Toyark

“There was a crooked man… and he walked a crooked mile; The crooked man stepped forth and… rang the crooked bell; And thus his crooked soul… spiraled into a crooked Hell; Murdered his crooked family… and laughed a crooked laugh.”

With the words above, the Crooked Man appears and begins to torment the Hodgson family. The characters is part of The Conjuring Universe, and briefly appeared in The Conjuring 2. The character was, at one point, slated for his own spinoff film. The Crooked Man poem above is a twisted version of the old English poem, adding a more horrific twist. The creepy character is now available in figure form as part of the new Conjuring Universe line of toys from NECA Toys. The figure has a number of interchangeable parts, and a few accessories.

Overall
The Crooked Man is part of NECA’s Ultimate Figure line. It featured a flapped window box with artwork from the film on the front, and a number of photos of the figure and its features on the back. The figure includes three interchangeable portraits, a removable hat, three swap out hands, an umbrella, and a zoetrope.

In The Conjuring Universe films, the demons and evil entities take on a number of shapes and objects. From unsettling dolls, to killer nuns. The Crooked Man is probably one of the absolutely creepiest looking characters is the entire franchise. The figure captures that look perfectly, with a slender design that matches the film pretty well. The sculpt work is excellent, with a highly detailed sculpted suit, and life like texture work on the faces and hands. The suit itself looks as if it could be removed to reveal each layer of clothing, though it’s mostly single sculpted pieces. The figure has a really solid amount of articulation. The figure has double jointed elbows, articulation where the neck meets the clavicle and also at the neck, waist articulation, and more. Paint work is excellent, with multiple layers on in each area. the suit has painted on black lines that seemed pretty crisp and clean. The skin is mostly white, with soft washes of tans and grays throughout.

For such a thin figure, the plastic feels surprisingly sturdy, as do the joints themselves. When I saw the heavier paint coating here, I feared the joints would have at least a few spots where the joints were paint locked. Thankfully, I didn’t run into any. While thin, the joints were tight without feeling like they would snap at any point. Areas like the ankles were sturdy and allowed to the figure to stand without issue in all of the poses I tried. I also appreciated how easy it was to swap out the hands and head sculpts. I didn’t need to use any heat here to loosen those spots up, and they popped off and snapped on with very little force required.

The figure includes a crooked umbrella, which sits perfectly in the grip hands included. There’s a tighter grip hand for the handle, and then one with a more loose grip, which can be used to hold it from the other end. Also included is the zoetrope, a small antique animation device, which is seen in the film. The cylinder and the crank were both movable, which was a nice touch. The hat is also removable and fits perfectly on all of the head sculpts.

While I’ve never personally been a fan of The Conjuring films, I was really impressed with how nice this figure turned out. It’s scary looking enough to fit in with any horror shelf, and is a fantastic overall figure. Check out a selection of photos below, and see the full gallery after that.
