HyperReal Luke Skywalker Photo Shoot

HyperReal is Hasbro’s all new figure format. These are 8 inch scale and use a metal skeleton underneath seamless silicone plastic. The result is no visible joints and increased detail on the larger size figure. So far, they’ve done Darth Vader (check our in depth gallery here) and today’s look – Luke Skywalker. Both are from their Empire run, with Luke wearing his Bespin gear. Luke comes packed with 2 heads, 6 pairs of hands, a saber / blade and Carbonite Chamber style display base. We’ve run Luke for a session showing off what he can do as a figure, and tossed in some fight shots with his Pop too (yes, the shot above was done using the toys). Overall Thoughts

OK, so when Vader dropped I said I had to wait and see what Luke would be like before passing judgement on the line. And now Luke is here, so I guess it’s time to judge. :) Overall, I like it. I feel like we could have used some additional paint, washing, especially on the clothes. As is, he feels a bit plain, especially for the increased price point. The head sculpts are great, an even more refined version of the upgrade head on the Black Series that just came out. The extra hands are welcome, helps for photography and just making sure your shelf pose is what you want. No holding invisible cups.

The real point I’m having an issue with is posing. The skeleton under the skin is a bit clunky. It doesn’t move the way I am used to with traditional Black Series. It requires swivels and clicks to move the arms and legs, and it’s tight. So getting the just right pose is a pain, and you can’t see what you are doing because it’s under the silicone. I feel like I’m going to break it by putting pressure in the wrong direction. Both Luke and Vader require slower, more focused posing than I am used to. It’s not a casual affair to get them into different poses. Which in turn means, these guys go on the shelf and don’t get touched unless I’m doing photos with them. And I like reposing my figures on a whim.

Bottom line, I like them, including Luke. But I have no desire to go deep roster. If they complete the Carbonite chamber circle of bases with other chamber characters, which is basically the bread and butter of Star Wars (Chewy, 3PO, Leia, Han, Lando, Boba, Stormtroopers) – I’d be done. In fact, give me Boba and a Trooper like this, and I’m good. Now, if the skeleton and posing is refined and gets better, then I’d be willing to take another look. Either way, some additional washing and paint is needed on this silicone clothing.
