Star Wars Select Return of the Jedi Boba Fett by Diamond Select Toys – Toyark Photo Shoot

When Diamond Select Toys acquired Gentle Giant in early 2019, one of the first things fans asked was about DST working on Star Wars action figures.  Earlier this month, that request was fulfilled. At a Disney hotel, and then later at a few Disney Stores, the first Star Wars Select 7″ Scale Figure made its debut! Their first entry is the iconic Bounty Hunter; Boba Fett. The figure is decked out in his look from Return of the Jedi.

Thanks to our friends at Diamond Select Toys, we are pleased to share an in-hand photo gallery of the newly released figure. The Boba Fett figure is a Disney Store Exclusive. The figure is not available online just yet, but it will be priced at $24.99. Read on to check out my photo gallery and review. I’ve made sure to take plenty of comparison images with different lines to show how well it scales with assorted 6″ and 7″ figures.

Overall
The Boba Fett figure is packed on bookend style card back, which is standard for most of the DST Select Figures. The spine of the box features a photo of Boba Fett from the films marketing. You will need to cut the plastic bubble to remove the figure.The figure and accessories sit in a plastic tray, with an umber of plastic ties holding them in. The figure includes two sets of interchangeable hands, an EE-3 Carbine Rifle, a firing effect, a flamethrower effect, and jet pack fire effects.

There is no shortage of Star Wars action figures in the world right now. Outside of Marvel, I can think of no other license that has such a wide array of figures available. Three of those figure lines are roughly 6″ scale, with heights varying slightly between Black Series, S.H. Figuarts, and MAFEX. Fans of smaller size figures have the 3.75″ scale Vintage Collection, and those looking for more high end figures have 1/6 Scale (12″ tall) figures from both Hot Toys and Sideshow. Outside of the stylized Movie Relization line, there isn’t much in the way for fans (like myself) who collect mainly 7″ scale action figures. I’m approaching this review as someone whose collection is made up mostly of 7″ scale or larger figures. The majority of video game, horror, and sci-fi figures I like just happen to be put out by companies like NECA, Super7, Storm Collectibles (even if they keep calling them 1/12 scale), McFarlane Toys, and Diamond Select Toys. So 7″ scale is just where I fell and I’ve grown to love that size class. In the end, I just don’t collect 6″ scale, save for a few characters I really love (like Robocop). With that out of the way, let’s dive in.

Right out of the package, the Boba Fett is a noticeably large figure that will not scale with any of the existing 6″ lines. I’m perfectly fine with that, but 6″ collectors will want to be aware of that. I stood him next to a tape measure, and from head-to-toe, he’s just over 7″ tall. At that size, Boba Fett stands just about head and shoulders taller than the Black Series version. With the larger scale comes a nicely detailed figure sculpt though. The armor and helmet look good, with nice sculpted in scuff marks, while the sculpted clothing has fairly realistic looking folds and textures. Articulation is about on par with the previously released Black Series Boba Fett. There’s a ball jointed neck, what feels like a ball jointed torso under the armor, double jointed knees, great range of motion in the hips, and ankle rockers. The elbows are really the only area that feel limited. They’re single jointed, and the way they are connected, and the bulky gauntlets, limit the range of motion a bit. You can still get him to grip his rifle with both hands, but you have to work the pose a bit. If you look at photo 022, you can get a good idea of how poseable the figure is. Joints were solid, with just a little tightness in the knees and torso. as I posed the figure a bit, those loosened up a bit. They never felt like they were going to snap (I had a hair dryer ready just in case they locked a bit).

Where the figure shines is with a detailed paint deco. The figure is covered heat to toe in paint. There’s heavy weathering on the armor and helmet, and layered paint washes throughout. Accessory wise, the figure is pretty solid. Boba Fett includes a set of relaxed hands, and a set of grip hands for the blaster rifle. Those swap out pretty easily and he pegs never felt like they would snap. The rifle has a translucent blast effect that attaches to the barrel. On the left gauntlet, a small piece is removable to attach the translucent flame thrower effect. On the back pack, you can attach blast effects to the exhaust ports for flight poses. For those wondering, the cape is all plastic.

All-in-all, I was pretty happy with the Select Boba Fett, and am curious how far into the roster they will go with the line up. It’s a solid overall figure that is comparable to most of their Marvel and Disney Select figures. Fans who collect mainly 6″ scale won’t see much of a reason to pick this up. However, it scales really well with NECA, Storm, McFarlane, and other Select figures. So if you’re looking for a Boba Fett to go with those shelves, then I think this is definitely worth a look.
