I ask because I have a question for you guys.
Would you buy a Line dedicated to Judge Dredd and his foes and allies if they
were done with the same attention to detail and articulation that DC Direct does for it's various batman lines (like the Arkham City figures out now)

And if you would buy them, which 4 or 5 characters should be done first (besides Dredd obviously) and does it matter which artist they are modeled after (Bolland, Staples, Ezquerra, McMahon) or not?

Well Toy Biz did the Legendary Heroes figures with comic Dredd and Death and those are pretty nice. I think Dredd , Death, and Anderson were done long ago from DC direct as part of the 2000 A.D. line.

Sort of, here's the story.

Back in 1999 a toy company called Re:Actionfigures made a toyline centered around the characters of 2000 AD.

I can tell you from what I saw and heard from people who carried this series that the only characters to sell where the ones related to Judge Dredd, no one bothered with Strontium Dog (Johnny Alpha) Durham Red (who looks like a generic Goth/hooker chick) and Slaine, who looks like a Scottish Conan the Barbarian rip-off!
The Dredd figures sold fast, but the 3 characters I just mentioned (NOT related to Dredd) where peg warmers for YEARS!

I would, but NOT by DC Direct. Only if Mattel did it. As much as I hate their politics, they are the only ones with the best sculpting capabilities (provided they don't skimp out on articulation).

Personally I'd like to see NECA do it.
I feel that not only could they pull off the sculpt and articulation really well, I think they would be able to make some KILLER 'DREDD' figures.

Dredd (Comic Version)
Dredd (Karl Urban Version)
Anderson
Judge Death
Rico

In my opinion having comic and movie versions of Dredd would be a great idea as Im pretty sure theyd BOTH sell well to comic fans and casual fans alike.

I think having Rico in there would be cool as you could do him in a messed up Judges uniform with removable helmet etc - also casual consumers might by him just cuz he looks like an effed up Dredd

Ironically, the Dredd Re:action figure is one of the worst in that line. I still like my Johnny Alpha but Durham Red look like a goth Barbie doll. Someone on a 2000AD facebook page once told me he met the woman that sculpted the Dredd proto and she admitted she hated the character and the design. The Toy Biz Dredd is way better and I'm glad I got that one instead of Re:action's.
I was really hoping for a Dredd movie figure line, thinking it would right up Neca's street but they've not said anything. Maybe there's a slim hope Hot Toys may do it, they did figures from Sucker Punch and that film died a death in the box office. I know 3A are working on a comic Dredd, that's said to borrow design aspects of several classics artists, but knowing 3A it probably won't appear until 2015, which leaves the minitures you can buy online.

I would love any kind of figure line, comic or Urban movie. Do the initial characters, Dredd, Anderson, Hershey, Death, Rico. Then more of the villians like the Angel Gang and Call Me Kennith (in a two-pack with Walter). Then move onto other 2000AD characters, especially the ABC Warriors

Been a Dredd fan for about as long as I can remember. And honestly, I'd be happy with Hasbro finishing what Toy Biz started.

NECA has some nice sculpts, but again, I feel like they would break if I opened them. Plus, NECA would probably only do 10 different versions of Dredd and no one else.

Can someone here tell me what fragility problems NECA has had? I've got over a dozen or so figure from them and they are pretty sturdy.

Well Ive posted this idea on another forum that I frequent Collectors Society Message Boards - Powered by UBB.threads™ and got positive responses there, so I thought I'd explain my plans here.

I ask if we should get judge dredd figures.
Since then I'm thinking why dont I do something to make that dream reality?

Alright I'm thinking about starting a campaign to get a Collector friendly toy company to make Judge Dredd figures.
Facebook, twitter, various action figure and comic book forums, maybe even an entire website dedicated to the idea.

It's about time his universe got a proper collector targeted toy line.
I mean Judge Dredd's been around almost 4 decades and upstarts like Axe cop get their own toyline???

I also thought that if the first 2 waves were a success They (hoping NECA )

could do a ''Artist'' series where there would be 3 figures a wave consisting of the main characters done in the art style of a particular artist.

One wave would be the ''Bolland'' series and have Dredd, Death and Anderson.
and another could be the ''Ezquerra'' wave and have Dredd, Rico and Mean Machine and all 3 would have parts for a build a figure Walter the Wobot.

Hey, if it works for DC Directs Countless waves of ''Artist inspired series'' why wouldn't it work for Dredd?

Now the toy company I'm targeting this campaign towards is NECA.

These are the most asked questions I've gotten about this potential toyline from another forum and I thought I'd share them here.

Then in 2005 Toybiz released 'Legendary Comic Book Heroes' and in it's first and most widely available wave Judge Dredd was the first and in most instances the only one to sell out!

I believe so. Statues and other related collectibles appear to sell VERY WELL.

You want to start small. Perhaps a single figure. Then roll the profits of that one into subsequent figures. The worst thing you can do when being an entrepreneur is to bury yourself in debt, then spend the next 10-20 years paying to correct a single mistake.

That's why I said the first 2 waves would be of only the comic and film forms of Dredd and Anderson resulting in 4 figures total, If they under perform no great loss to the company.

How much would it cost to license the character? That takes a big chunk out of profit. That I don't know.

One thing I think is that their costumes are - lets face it - impossible

You probably can't move an arm with that big ass eagle on there, especially out of plastic

Believe it or not The very first Judge Dredd action figure from 1999 (from the now defunct re:actionfigures) had this problem fixed.
They attached the Eagle and armor shoulder pads via a swivel peg to the back of the left and right shoulders so when you lifted either arm the armor would move up or down.
Toybiz's Judge Dredd had the shoulder armors glued to the arms which resulted in the situation you mentioned.

I would love some of those figures that are hero-clox size or a bit bigger

I think they did those before, better price range, set action positions make it easier

Then huge range of figures for citizens , juves, perps, muties, bike patrols, Max normal, Maria other judges cadets

Buildings etc

For moveable maybe Star Wars figure size might be better

On top of the 7 inch Mature collector line there would be a series of 3 1/2 scale figures (think Star wars/G.I. Joe) specifically for diorama and army building.
Where the 7 inch line would have 32 points of articulation and only a few figures (only the main heroes and villains) a year made the 3 1/2 inch line would have 14 points of articulation and allow for a wider array of characters like gangs, army and more obscure characters and even vehicles to be made to be made.

If they did 3.75" (Marvel Universe/gi joe/Star Wars etc) Id go nuts - Id be like a damn crack addict hunting those things down

I think a 7" scale (or thereabouts) collector's line is probably the way to go. IMHO, there would have to be another major film in the works for a 3.75" line to work at retail. Look at Wolverine, for example. A very popular Marvel character (so about as mainstream as you can get) and both of his LAMs got very small runs for a toy line.

Now you take Dredd, who is a fairly popular character in his own right (and THE most popular of the 2000 A.D. "cast") but he is still largely considered a cult hero compared to most Marvel/DC marquis characters. I just don't see him being able to support his own 3.75" without heavy media support of some sort.

Having said all that, I'd be all over a 3.75" Dredd line like ants on an apple at a picnic. My two Toybiz figures are getting bored constantly trying to carry out each other's death sentence
