Art Asylum Blog AskDST #62 - Star Trek Edition
We’ve got a slightly-belated edition of AskDST this week focusing on your MASSIVE amount of Star Trek questions! So if you want to discover the fate of Kang, discuss the new TWOK Phaser and scan for cryptic clues about the forthcoming 3 3/4 inch figures - you can read it all after the jump! Ron Russamano I do not really care if this gets posted or not in your blog. But I would like to take the time to say thanks and good job on all the figures you guys have made for the ST series and BSG series. I don’t care much for the TOS but respected since it was the original. How ever I had a pre order on both the Ezri Dax figure at a comic shop in town but they went out of business before the figure came out and I kind of lost my money on the figure, but it’s not the money I care about. I want the figure. The same thing happened with Kira when she came out but they just redirected to me to another place and I was able to get Kira. What’s the chance of me finding her? Also I don’t care about the 1701 part but I just want Geordi LaForge in the First Contact uniform for my collection. I did not even know he existed! I just got into DST and AA figures last year in the summer so come to my surprise there he is. I don’t need perfect package or any thing like that. I’m just looking to complete my crew. Since we see the captain’s chair collection and with the Sisko and Defiant chair come out soon. (f- in can wait) well we see a Janeway chair and an Archer chair. DSTChuck: Sorry to say Ron since these are all limited to one time production run they only stay in stock at our web store as long as stock last. However several online retailers might have stock on some older figures for you. I’d recommend, Action Figure Xpress, New Force or Entertainment Earth to start. Good luck, sorry I can’t be more help! Kenneth Netzel Hi. I really enjoy your selection of Star Trek action figures. But I was wondering…why is there NOT a Nomad action figure from the classic Star Trek episode “The Changeling?” You seem to put out all sorts of Star Trek aliens, even the Mugato who appeared briefly in an episode, where Nomad was a major character in a popular classic Star Trek episode. There has never been a figure, a model or toy of this icon from the classic Star Trek, aside from a garage kit, maybe. So have you ever considered doing a Nomad toy with lights and sound? I believe it would be a popular seller, especially since it was redone as Star Trek the Motion picture. I know I would buy one. Thanks for any input. DSTChuck: Kenneth, one issue with the Trek license is coming to the realization that no matter which figures and how many figures you do there will be a bunch of fans that are not happy because they did not get the characters they wanted the most. We try and balance as many of the franchises as we can with sales projections and cost. It’s far from an exact science but we do the best we can. Nomad has not been considered at this point. Sorry. Roddy DeHart How are the TWOK phaser selling? If they sell enough (I have bought 3) can you please make a ST III / IV phaser? I would buy three of those as well, maybe more! DSTChuck: It’s still pretty early to say but they seem to be doing pretty well. We’ve already got the next Tek item in development but we are just not ready to say anything about it- until it’s just right. Hold tight. Naisu Baddi The new Captain Kirk figure that was scheduled to be released as part of wave 5 has been up for pre-order on the ToysRus website (along with an “exclusive” Romulan) for awhile now. The site lists January 2010 as an approximate release date. If wave 5 is cancelled, is there a chance that this figure will still be released through ToysRus? I really hope you guys find some way to release it. I think it’s the best Captain Kirk figure you’ve ever made and one of the overall best-looking figures in the entire history of your Star Trek line. DSTChuck: Just like we did with BSG not too long ago we’re doing the same with Trek. Due to some delays on the TRU and DST side as well as some sales lower then expected we’re going to reshuffle the timing and contents of some waves and get product re-introduced soon. Scott Pollock Q: Do you guys know how cool the ST II phaser toy is? A: ( I will answer for you.) Yes we do. We made it. Comment: It is truly an awesome piece!!! You guys hit a home run again!!! I could not put the thing down! Truly awesome! I love the fact that you have to select a setting to shoot. I am sure this will keep many a Starfleet officer from shooting their foot off. Keep the good work coming. DSTChuck: Looks like you said it all! Shaun Baer Greetings - I am extremely upset and need to let you know about my frustration. I am about to lose a pre-ordered Toys-R-Us Kang item because of the delay in his arrival and the policies of Toys-R-Us. I know you have mentioned a disappointment in the number of pre-orders. Here is an example as to why I have chosen not to: I was so excited when the announcement came in August about the Toys R Us Kang action figure. Despite my better judgment, I pre-ordered it instantly. I was really looking forward to having another character to add to my collection that wasn’t Kirk or Spock. Of course, it was supposed to be out by September 30. Well, September 30 came and went as did October. In that time, due to a major conflict with my bank, I closed the account I had there and opened a new account with another bank. I assumed that if Kang actually made it onto the shelves, I would simply change the payment method. Unfortunately, Toys R Us is not allowing me to do so. The item will be processed, the card denied, and the order canceled. The figure is no longer available on their website. While they are pacifying me with free shipping on my next purchase and putting a note in the file to try and see if they can catch the problem, it is likely that I will lose this item and my only recourse will be to go from store to store or pay way too much for it on eBay. I realize that this item is one commissioned through Toys-R-Us and therefore it is unlikely that you will be able to do anything about it. I just thought you should have another story of why many of us don’t place pre-orders. A lot can change in the amount of time it takes you to get these figures out. If the scheduled release date is missed, it can cause problems for your collectors. With so many exciting Star Trek items being canceled by you this year I was very much looking forward to this one new character and now it is likely I will not even get that. It looks as though we can finally place pre-orders through DST for certain Star Trek items. Unfortunately it’s more Kirks and Spocks that I don’t need…but I guess it’s a step in the right direction. I love your products. They bring me a lot of joy and I thank you for that. However, the distribution has been a serious problem and I do believe it plays a big factor in the success of your product. If there is anything you can do to help me secure a Kang figure, I would greatly appreciate it. If not, then please find a way to fix this continuing problem or pre-orders and release dates before you have no choice but to close the door on this license. Your work is just too good to let that happen. So…of course there is a TON of speculation…are they in league with Playmates? Will 3 3/4 figures become a reality? Will they ever release a figure that isn’t Kirk or Spock again? ;-) Obviously, you’re not going to let out any information prematurely…but can you tell us when we’ll hear something? There has been so much disappointment this year with cancellations, delays, and way too many Kirks…I’d love to know when to look forward to some good news! DSTChuck: Shaun, I am very sorry for your problems with your per-order and seems like TRU has done what they can. Now I know a great deal of your problem would not have happened if there had been no delay in DST delivering the product to TRU, and for that I am personally sorry. This has been a trying year for everyone and DST has had some hurdles we did not expect. That said it’s our job to make a good product on time and we have failed at that more times then we would have liked this year. I do want to clarify, when we at DST say pre-orders we are referring to orders from retailers not consumers, I do know some retailers use customer orders as a basis for their orders with DST and from that front we need to do a better job keeping fans updating and delivering on our promises. Roddy DeHart Upon seeing the quality of the TWOK phaser, at least two other people ( besides me) on the Star Trek action figure collection forums have voiced their desire for a Star Trek III phaser; see here: twok phaser - Trektoy Forum comments? DSTChuck: You vote has been recorded. We’ll see what we can do. Benjamin Rogers Hello, Well now that you have made the Wrath of Khan phaser, (Great job by the way) Is there any chance you will be making the Star Trek 3 phaser or the Star Trek 5 and 6 phaser? Thank you for you time. DSTChuck: There is a chance yes BUT neither of those will be the next Trek Tek figure. Dave Cordes I just received my TWOK phaser and I am blown away! The sounds and LEDs are very realistic. You’ve created a near movie prop replica. I am especially impressed how you used the same interlocking magnetic connector as the Enterprise-D for the hand phaser detachment and I how it automatically makes the recharge sound when it connects. I was wondering though exactly how will the exclusive TMP phaser distinguish itself from TWOK version as far as lights and sounds? Since the phaser was never actually fired in The Motion Picture I am assuming you are going to take some creative license with this or is it basically just the same phaser repackaged without the trigger knob and with some different colored LEDs? Will you be producing phasers from Star Trek 3 and 6? DSTChuck: The TMP and TWOK phasers have different colored lights and some of the sounds are different. We were able to find reference from TMP and we went from there. From time to time we have had to “create” missing details in the Trek Tek line an in those cases we’ve shown CBS what we wanted to do and the reasons and had a good dialogue back and forth to come up with a solid solution. Michael Schinke Hey guys, I recently received my Wrath of Khan Phaser system and I am incredibly impressed! The methods used to implement the play features, as well as the additions to the features beyond the little seen screen actions, has pushed this to the head of my Trek Tek line of favorites, just squeaking our ahead of the Enterprise Phase Pistol you put out some years ago. It seems you guys (and girls, I’m sure) are the only outfit actually investing in new ways to increase both the role play and collectors value of your products while still finding ways to control costs. Great work to everyone involved and I can’t wait to see what comes next! DSTChuck: Thanks for the kind words! The toughest part about this line is balancing all the ideas the product manager has with the target SRP, seems we always have to drop some feature and we just hope the ones we like are the same as the ones the fans are looking for. Andrew Lehtola I wanted to compliment you on TWOK phaser. This phaser was the least of my favorites, but the toy blew me away! All the features on it are outstanding!! I love the quality and detail you put into your toys and pray you never lose the Star Trek license. Now… as I calm down from my excitement … I will ask my question … with the TWOK communicator on the way, and a TMP variant on the phaser, is there any possibility you will release a TMP tricorder? Also, are there any updates on when TWOK communicator will be out? I asked in a previous question if you are considering a TMP tricorder. I also wanted to mention TWOK tricorder as well. Any chance of that? DSTChuck: We’ve got the next Tek item planned already and I can tell you it’s not a Tricorder. I think we need a little break from the last one, it took long enough…. The biggest issue with selecting the next Tek item is there are SO many cool items out there that could be done. Christopher Coombs 1) I just received notification from Toys R US that the Kang figure has been cancelled. Please tell me that it is not so, and that Kang will come out some other way. 2) Are Kirk & Spock from Mirror, Mirror still coming out? 3) What is the fate of the Romulan Figure from TRU? Thanks Chris DSTChuck: You order might be canceled but Kang is not he is still part of the wave for TRU with Mirror Spock and Kirk. After that we’re re-structuring some waves and we’ll see how we can best get the characters we’ve already shown into the hands of consumers. Tony Rowland I love your USS Enterprise light-and-sound models, and have at least four of the different variants, including the “All Good Things” Enterprise-D (what a beautiful model, seriously!) I used to collect the Playmates toys, and have far too many of those to display, but the ships I have always wanted to see, the USS Reliant and the classic Klingon Battlecruiser, have eluded both companies. Neither Playmates nor you have ever made either. Are you gonna? I would have loved to have a Reliant to display next to my battle-damaged Wrath of Khan Enterprise. Oh, and Enterprise-C. Gotta have an Enterprise-C. Also, I’ve seen at least one comment on one of the battle-damaged Wrath of Khan Enterprise models, the one with the significant saucer section damage: that ship has the battle damage from Star Trek III, not Star Trek II as indicated on the box. While I love that toy, it really is a Trek III ship. Just sayin’. Finally, I love all the role play toys as well, but have always wanted to see the Trek III phaser or Trek V-VI combat phaser. Playmates did moderate justice to the combat phaser, but it was too small (made for little hands), and was not to scale. Any chance of an adult-sized combat phaser replica? So, Reliant, classic series Klingon Cruiser, Enterprise-C, a Trek III phaser and a Trek V-VI combat phaser. Wanna see, wanna buy. Please advise. DSTChuck: Tony, right now we seem able to get about one ship a year into fans hands, we’d like to do more but at the pace we’re able to produce these (they do take a good bit of time and effort) it’s going to take a good bit of time to get to all the models fans would like. I think the Trek3 ship your referring to was done by AA a number of years ago before we became involved and I think their intention was a more composite ship then a definitive model. When we came on board we decided to change the decos and produce versions closer to the screen models. We’ll see if someday we get to tackle the new movie products, cross your fingers. Matt Stefiuk Ok….so…I can’t even BEGIN to tell you just how excited I am that your company is producing “Iron Man 2″ action figures based off the forthcoming film. I loved Hasbro’s 6-inch figures and collected them all…I despise most 3 and 3/4 inch figures and much prefer 6 to 7-inch range figures in terms of size. Just..cooler, more fun to play with, easier to hold haha. Anyways you guys do phenomenal work I have some of your newer movie based Star Trek figures (Nemesis, First Contact which was the best Trek movie in my opinion) I have TWO questions please: 1–Will the line up for the Iron Man figures be more than just Iron Man (please say yes please say yes please say yes)–it would be fantastic to get a full line up of say 5 characters villains and all. 2–Are there any plans whatsoever for a Borg Queen figure? I’ve always wanted that character made into an action figure. Thanks and hope to hear from you, keep up the great work! DSTChuck: 1. Hmm not sure if this is more a Marvel question or a Trek question. We will not be able to do all the characters from IM2, sorry but sadly the MS line comes out no more then one a month so we’d never be able to get all the figures done in a timely manner. While I see you prefer larger figures, the Minimates lineup for IM2 will be pretty comprehensive. 2. We do still love many of the figures from the planned Borg waves and have not given up hope of getting some of them into stores. Brandon Giles You caught a bunch of us off guard in the last Q&A with the comments about Playmate’s possible forthcoming Star Trek TOS 3 3/4″ line, and the possibility that maybe DST “cooked something up.” Is there anything further that you can reveal? Could the cancelation of Playmates Second wave of Movie figures open any doors for DST to give it a shot at DST sculpted 2009 Movie figures in 7″ and maybe 3 3/4″? I’m hoping for a line of figures that DST and Playmates both have a hand in creating so I am very much looking forward to any information that you can reveal. DSTChuck: I was unaware Playmates had pulled the plug on any of their figures so no it does not have any impact on the plans we’ve discussed with Playmates.
